  • Location In the Northeastern part of the Current
    U.S.
  • Colonies Massachusetts, Connecticut, New
    Hampshire, Rhode Island
  • (The area of Vermont was claimed by New York and
    New Hampshire)
  • (The area of Maine was part of Massachusetts.)

Massachusetts
  • Settled by the Pilgrims in 1620
  • Joined by the Puritans in the 1630s.
  • Massachusetts became VERY religious.

Connecticut
  • Founded by Thomas Hooker from Massachusetts
    because he felt that the elected leaders had too
    much power in 1636.

  • The settlers wrote the Fundamental Orders of
    Connecticut
  • It became a separate colony in 1662.

Fundamental Orders of Connecticut
  • Gave the vote to ALL men who owned property, not
    just the church members.
  • 1st Constitution in the Americas.
  • It also limited the governments power.

Rhode Island
  • Roger Williams from Massachusetts also thought
    that the church had too much power in the
    government.
  • He believed in Religious tolerance.
  • In 1636, he bought land from the Indians and made
    a settlement there.

  • Anne Hutchinson was ordered out of Massachusetts
    for questioning the Puritan teachings.

  • The soil was rocky.
  • Their forests were full of wild turkey and deer.
  • People also cut down the trees.
  • Fishing was also very good Cod, Halibut, and
    Whales.
  • Whales supplied oil for lamps.
