Peasants Revolt continued What Caused this Event
  • Feudal System peasants worked for the lords and
    had to make payments to the lords.
  • Statute of Labourers (1351) this law was passed
    after the end of the Black Death. Peasants were
    forced to work for the same wages as before.
  • Tithes to the Church peasants had to pay around
    10 of what they made to the Church
  • Hundred Years War (1337-1453) A series of
    conflicts between England and France. In order to
    pay for this war, a Poll Tax was imposed on the
    population of England.

  • This event is sometimes referred to as the
    beginning of the end for the feudal system.
  • Peasants were seen in a different way. Lords
    found out that the peasants could threaten
    society.
  • Peasants, or people in general, start to question
    authority.

  • Indulgence a donation to the Church that came
    with a promise from the Pope to reduce ones time
    in purgatory.
  • Purgatory a place in between life and heaven.
  • Indulgences start to be seen as a money exchange
    more than good works.

Protestant Reformation cont.
  • Before the Protestant Reformation, there is only
    one way to follow Christianity. This is called
    Roman Catholicism.
  • Roman Catholics believe that the Pope is the
    ultimate voice on earth. The Pope is the closest
    person to heaven.
  • Indulgences payment to the Pope good works
    done faster way to get to heaven.

  • Martin Luther questions these values and
    traditions through faith alone.
  • Luther develops the 95 Theses. These were 95
    points against indulgences and the Roman Catholic
    Church.
  • Luther translates the Holy Bible into a German
    language that many people spoke and understood.
  • The printing press is developed Allows Luther
    to get his word out and reach the majority of the
    population in Europe.

  • Many people decide to follow Luthers ideas. This
    is the start of Protestantism.
  • The Christian faith is now split into two main
    ideas Catholicism and Protestantism.

  • The start, or re-birth, of humanism the idea
    that all humans / individuals have the ability to
    determine what is true and what is false.
  • In other words, people are starting to THINK for
    themselves.

  • During the Middle Ages, scientific knowledge was
    still based off of the knowledge during ancient
    times.
  • Paradigm shift occurs a fundamental change in
    approach about assumptions / ideas.
  • Religion, superstition, and fear are replaced
    with reason and scientific knowledge.
  • Foundation of modern science.
