• The economy in New England was reliant on jobs
  that used the resources of the ocean
• Fishing
• Trade

• Another common occupation was whaling.
• Why was there a demand for whales? What could
  you do with them?
• Whale oil lamps were the main source of lighting
  until the invention of the electric light bulb

Puritans

• The success of the Separatists in America
  attracted other religious dissidents.
• Puritans emigrated to New England as well for
  religious reasons
• What do you think the difference between
  Separatists and Puritans are?

Rather than just be separate, Puritans are going
to purify the church.

• A group that was very intense in their religious
  beliefs, (and intolerant of all others) the
  Puritans wanted to show how great a civilization
  founded on their religion could be
• Wanted to create a City on a Hill

They wanted their civilization to be a shining

Puritan Control of Massachusetts

• In order for people to redeem themselves, they
  needed to be able to study the Bible constantly
• Created the 1st university in America, Harvard
  for the training of priests.
• Passed literacy laws

• Religion was at the center of life
• God was ever present in lives of Puritans
• Very strict set of moral laws
• Celebrations considered sinful
• Illegal to work on Sunday
• Enforced dress codes
• Public displays of affection

King Philips War

• The growth of the population of New England and
  the subsequent demand for more land put the
  colonists into conflict with the local Wampanoag
  tribe under Montacalm, or King Philip.
• Where have we heard of this group before?

Same group that was at the 1st Thanksgiving!

• 1 of entire population of New England was killed
  in the fighting
