Beginnings

• Abraham- founder of Judaism
• Different from others in Mesopotamia-He believed
  that there was only one god--Jehovah
• Told by God to go to Canaan

• Canaan
• A famine caused the Hebrews to go to Egypt in
  search of food.
• After living in Egypt many years the Egyptian
  enslaved the Hebrews because they were afraid the
  Jews would become too powerful

Leaving Egypt

• Moses was selected by God to lead the Hebrews out
  of Egypt to go back to Canaan the Exodus (the
  leaving)
• American slaves sang about Moses to keep their
  hopes of freedom alive
• Mt. Sinai God gave Moses the Ten Commandments-
  a set of rules regarding responsible behavior
  value human life, self-control, and justice

• You shall have no other gods before me.
• What does this mean?
• You shall not bear false witness against your
  neighbor.
• What does this mean?
• Why do you think Moses led the Hebrews to Canaan?

• The Ten Commandments are recognized by 3
  religions
• Judaism
• Christianity
• Islam
• All 3 religions recognize Abraham as an important
  person in their religious beliefs

Jewish Beliefs

• Belief in ONE GOD
• Education, justice and righteousness
• Obedience and law
• Ten Commandments and the Mosaic law

• Religion is the foundation upon which the Jews
  base their whole society
• Jews dont say YHWH (Yahweh) , their name for
  God, because they consider it to be too holy.
• Many people believe that Judaism is the oldest
  monotheistic religion in the world

• The Torah is the Jews holy book
• A synagogue is the Jewish house of worship
• Hanukkah is a Jewish tradition that marks the
  miracle of the lamp oil that was supposed to last
  only a day but lasted 8 days for the rededication
  of the Second Temple (or synagogue).

Romans

• 63 B.C. Hebrews (Jews) were conquered by the
  Romans
• Were not respected by the Romans BUT were allowed
  to keep their own religion as long as they
  respected and followed Roman law
• Jesus was born during the time the Romans ruled
  Israel.
