Did you know?
  • The American Academy of Pediatricians determined
that children are currently spending an average
of seven hours a day on entertainment media,
    including televisions, computers, phones and
other electronic devices (American Academy of
    Pediatrics).
  • Common Sense Media reported that nearly 40 of
children under 2 have used a mobile device
    (Common Sense Media, 2013).
  • Two-thirds of children say their parents have "no
rules" about the time they spend with media (The
Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, 2010).

Advantages of Technology
  • The computer is, without question, the single
most important tool of modern society. Our
    limiting kids' computer time would
    be like
    hunter-gatherer
    adults limiting their kids'
    bow-and-arrow
    time
    (Gray, 2012).

Advantages of Technology
  • Playing video games
    can improve
    motor
    skills and coordination
    (Nemours)
  • Pro-Social games can
    increase empathy

    (Bashara, 2015)

(Bashara, 2015)
6
Advantages of Technology
  • Increases 21st Century Skills that can help
children succeed in education and their future
    careers
  • Phones and tablets provide
    children with BYOT
    devices
    and ways to
    contact parents

    in an emergency situation

(Christensen, 2015)
7
Advantages of Technology
  • Easier for learners and teachers to communicate
    about topic (TeachThought, 2013)
  • Improves student interest in and interaction with
    content (TeachThought, 2013)
  • Compliments childs learning

Disadvantages of Technology
  • Has negative effects on a childs social
    development
  • Harder to sleep at night
    (American Academy of
    Pediatrics)
  • Decreases academic
    performance (Screen time
    linked to obesity and
    decreased
    academic
    achievement, 2013)

10
Disadvantages of Technology
  • Increases
  • aggressive behaviors (Nemours)
  • attention deficit disorder/attention deficit
    hyperactivity disorder (ADD/AHD), screen
    addiction, and sleep disorders (Nemours)
  • participation in risky
    behaviors (Nemours)
  • risk of attention problems,
    anxiety, depression, and
    behavioral problems
    (Preidt, 2015)

11
Disadvantages of Technology
  • Increases risk of weight gain (obesity) (Nemours)
  • Decreased time for play activity (less
    movement) (Baby Centre, 2013)
  • Weaker sensory
    and balance
    systems
  • Can decrease
    appetite
    control
    (Baby Centre, 2013)

12
Disadvantages of Technology
Part of the reason to avoid screen time is that
babies and toddlers need lots of physical
activity. Time spent playing with a tablet or
smartphone means your baby is not crawling,
walking, climbing and exploring her environment
(Baby Centre, 2013). https//www.youtube.com/watch
