A. Early Setbacks

1. Not all colonists supported independence
   Loyalists supported the British
2. The British had a powerful navy, well-trained
   soldiers, and the support of Native Americans and
   German mercenaries
3. Gen. George Washington is forced to abandon NYC
   in 1776

B. Turning Points

1. Gen. Washingtons troops win important battles at
   Trenton and Princeton
2. Patriots defeat the British in the Battle of
   Saratoga in 1777
3. American victories encourage France to enter into
   a formal alliance with the U.S. in 1778

C. The Long Road to Victory

• American soldiers survive many hardships at
  Valley Forge (1777-1778)
• With the help of the French, Washington is able
  to surround the British at Yorktown, Virginia
• Britain surrenders in 1781

• 4. In 1783, the Treaty of Paris recognized
  American independence, and established the
  Mississippi River as the western border of the
  U.S.
