Title: Acids, Bases and pH

1
Acids, Bases and pH
2
1. Acids
  • Any compound that GIVES OFF H ions in solution
  • Ex. HCl H and Cl-
  • Traits
  • Sour
  • ex. Juices, vinegar, HCl

Add water
3
2. Bases
  • Any compound that GIVES OFF OH- ions in solution
  • Ex. NaOH Na and OH-
  • Traits
  • Slippery
  • Ex. Soaps, detergent, ammonia

Add water
4
3. Neutralization
  • Equal amounts of acid and base together
  • Acid (H)
  • Base (OH-)
  • HOH H2O
  • As and Bs make salts when you have same amounts
  • Ex.
  • HCl (Hydrochloric acid) NaOH (Sodium
hydroxide) ? H2O (water) NaCl (table
    salt)

5
4. BUFFERS
  • substances that react with strong acids or bases
    to prevent sudden pH change
  • What do you take when stomach is upset?? (HINT
What digestive factor is in the stomach??)
  • Antacids (made of calcium carbonatea weak base!)

6
5. pH scale
  • measures the concentration strength of acids and
    bases.
  • pH 0-6.9 acid
  • Strong acids 1-3
  • pH 7.1-14 base
  • Strong base pH 11 - 14
  • pH 7 neutral (water)

6. Litmus paper
  • Tests for Acids or bases
  • Turns Red acidic
  • Turns Blue basic

Lets Practice pH activity
  • YOU TRY Go to my website. Click on Living
Environment Homepage. Then click on the link for
The Biochemistry Page. Go to pH activity and
    complete each activity.
  • Go to a computer and use the site below to
conduct an investigation on acids and bases.
