• 1831 began voyage on HMS Beagle
• employed as a naturalist
• voyage was to take 5 years with no pay

  Islands

  finches on the islands

• Variations are caused by numerous factors most
  likely of which are mutations in an organisms
  DNA, that then are passed on (modern genetics)
