  • First 10 Amendments to the Constitution

  • September 25, 1789 Congress proposed 12
    amendments to the Constitution.
  • 10 were ratified (approved) by the states.
  • These 10 became known as the Bill of Rights.

  • Freedom of

  • Press
  • Assembly

2nd Amendment
  • Right to bear arms
  • Well regulated militia necessary to the security
    of the state
  • Right of people to keep and bear arms

3rd Amendment
  • Quartering Troops
  • No soldier shall in time of peace be quartered in
    any house
  • Need the consent of the owner

  • Searches and Seizures
  • Warrants need to be issued
  • Probable cause reasonable grounds needed for a
  • warrant

  • Criminal Proceedings
  • Charged with a crime in front of a judge - Grand
    Jury indictment for felony
  • Due Process
  • Cannot be deprived of liberties without rules
    being followed
  • No Double Jeopardy
  • No Self incrimination
  • Eminent Domain

  • Criminal Proceedings
  • Right to a speedy trial
  • Right to jury trial with an impartial jury
  • Right to be informed of charges
  • Right to an attorney
  • Right to have and cross-examine witnesses.

  • Civil Trials
  • Civil cases in federal court
  • Dispute between private parties
  • Right to trial by jury if amount disputed exceeds

  • Right of bench trial if both parties agree

  • Punishment for Crimes
  • No excessive bail
  • No excessive fines
  • No cruel or unusual punishment

  • Unenumerated Rights
  • All rights and liberties are not listed in the
    Bill of Rights, does not mean that there are not
    other rights held by the people
  • Safety net

10th Amendment
  • Powers Reserved to the States
  • Some powers are not given to the central
    government or denied to the states
  • These powers are state powers
