Title: Safety First!

1
Safety First!
  • Safety starts with you!

2
Safety in history
3
A lot has happened in safety throughout the years
  • Kids your age used to work in areas that were
    very dangerous
  • There were no rules or regulations to keep young
    people safe

4
Even children younger than you worked in unsafe
conditions
5
There was little concern for worker safety
6
Concern for safety grows
  • In the 1900s in the U.S., companies and the
government began to think about safety

7
One of the main events that made people aware of
the need for safety in the workplace was the
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire that occurred on
March 25, 1911, where 146 garment workers, mostly
girls, died due to a lack of safety measures.

9
At the time of the fire the factory fire exit
doors were locked and the doors that were not
locked only opened inwards and so were held shut
by the onrush of workers trying to escape the
fire. Also at the time of the fire the only
safety measures available for the workers were 27
buckets of water.
10
Positive Changes
  • Frances Perkins, the first female cabinet member
and Secretary of Labor, began her commitment to
workplace safety and health soon after witnessing
    the tragic 1911 fire.

11
In 1911, also after the fire, the American
Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) was formed to
help address safety issues.
12
Over the years safety has become an integral part
of state and federal law, helping to protect
workers in all industries.
13
Learn to be safe!
  • Today, we continue to face unsafe situations
    everyday.
  • There are people in the workplace that help us
    stay safe.

14
The Safety Professional
  • There are many different kinds of safety
    professionals.
  • The safety professional protects people, property
    and the environment.

15
Safety Professionals are Needed Everyday
  • They identify hazards and carry out safety
advances in all industries and workplaces.
  • They help keep many different workers in many
    different industries safe.
  • Such as

Firefighters

ASSE Region VI Vice President who works within
the school system as Assistant Director for
environmental management for the Virginia Beach
City Public Schools. Virginia Beach City Public
Schools serve more than 76,000 students, spread
over 87 schools and 10 auxiliary buildings. His

professionals! Visit and see how you can avoid
becoming a zombie at work and clocking out for
good. Helpful for now and in your future.

23
Safety Science is a new term for everything
that goes into the prevention of accidents,
illnesses, fires, explosions and other events
which harm people, property and the environment.
24
Safety Science may be a new word but it came
from many sciences you already know
  • Chemistry and biology provide knowledge of
    hazardous substances
  • Physics tells people about electricity,
radiation and other forms of energy that can be
    unsafe if not used properly
  • Psychology helps people understand human
    behavior to avoid accidents
  • And many more!
