  • Raphael was born talented. He received early
    training from his father Giovanni Santi.
  • When Raphael was young he focused a lot of his
    time on studying the works of his masters,
    Leonardo and Michelangelo. He hoped to one day
    match their skills.
  • Giovanni de'Medici was elected to be the pope and
    he thought that Raphael was easier to work with
    than Michelangelo. He then began to paint and
    design buildings with his cousin, Giulio
    de'Medici, for the pope.

  • His first documented work was an altarpiece in
    San Nicola of Tolentino, but it was destroyed in
    an earthquake and only a few pieces are left.
  • In 1508 Raphael moved to Rome and painted a few
    of the rooms in the Vatican.
  • Some of his Madonna paintings were made into
    postage stamps.

  • He had a large interest in portraiture
  • He painted most of his pictures using oil and
    wood.
  • Now, he is know to be one of the most detailed
    painters.
  • In 1501 he began to be called Master.
  • Because of some of his paintings he was thought
    to be a kind and gentle man.

  • In 1507 Raphael was asked to paint the Deposition
    of Christ that is in the Borghese Gallery in
    Rome.
  • He painted many paintings about, this could mean
    that he was very religious.
  • He was not well known in Rome, but he mad a deep
    impression on Julius II, and became better well
    known with time.

St. George and the Dragon. Painted in 1504-1506
St. George was one of the most popular Christian
saints, he was the subject of many renaissance
paintings.

  • Madonna of the Chair, 1518
  • The Madonnas that were crated were thought to be
    influenced by Leonardo.
  • This painting is considered to be the most famous
    of the Madonnas.

  • This was the last work Raphael did.
  • He did not paint the known story he combined it
    with The Healing of the Lunatic Boy
  • This painting was supposedly finished by one of
    his students after he died in 1520

  • He drew this of himself when he was a teen.
