Title: Caffeine

1
Caffeine
  • By Alex Norez

2
Does caffeine affect your memory
  • Does caffeine effected boys or girls more?
  • In my tests, it seems to help remember the items
    in the box.

3
Research
  • The caffeine soda that I used in my investigation
was Mt. Dew. It is made by Pepsi and it contains
for every 8 oz, 110 calories, 40 mg of sodium
(salt), 31 g of carbohydrates, and 36 mg of
caffeine. Some of the ingredients in Mt. Dew are
water, high fructose corn syrup, orange juice,
and other ingredients. My research into caffeine
tells me that the chemical name is
1,3,7-trimethylxanthine and has its formula is
C8H10N4O2. Which are Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen,
and Oxygen. 10 grams of caffeine will kill you.
You would have to drink 2,400 oz (300 cups) of
Mt. Dew to be poisoned. Nine out of ten
Americans drink caffeine every day, either in
coffee or pop. Caffeine works in your brain. It
slows down the chemical that causes you to be
sleepy. This keeps your brain awake. It also
increases dopamine and makes you happier and in a
better mood. Some facts on the human brain
include that it weighs about three pounds. A
cats brain weighs only 2 of the human brain.
The brain also has 100,000,000,000 (100 Billion)
    neurons.

Procedure
  • Procedure
  • select the 6 boys and 6 girls to participate
  • have the boys look in the box for 1 minute
  • cover the box
  • have the boys write down the items on paper
  • give them a cup of Mt. Dew
  • wait 2 minutes
  • show them the box again
  • time them 1 minute
  • cover the box
  • list the items in the box
  • repeat steps with the girls

8
Variables
  • Independent-the boys and the girls
  • Dependent-the items listed by the boys and the
girls before and after drinking the Mt. Dew
  • Control-same amount of time, same items, same
    amount of Mt. Dew

9
Results
  • My hypothesis was correct. The boys remembered
more items than the girls after they drank the
Mt. Dew. The boys remembered more items by 24
with the caffeine, and the girls remembered 18
more items. Two girls showed no change in the
number of items remembered, but no one had fewer
    items than without the caffeine.
