SQ3R

• The SQ3R method is a sequence of strategies that
  help with comprehension when reading content area
  or informational texts. Follow this simple
  sequence

SURVEY

• Preview what you are about to read and prepare to
  set a purpose for the reading.
• Look for
• headings and subheadings (these are the topics of
  the text), introduction, pictures, captions,
  questions, highlighted words, etc.

How do I Survey?

• Read all the headings and subheadings.
• Skim the introduction paragraph.
• Look at the pictures.
• Read the captions under the pictures.
• Read the vocabulary words.
• Read the vocabulary definitions in the margins.

Create QUESTIONS

• Turn each heading and subheading into a question.
  
• Begin your question with one of the following
• "Who, What, When, Where, Why, and/or How
• For example the chapter title is Coal A Buried
  Treasure. Possible questions are
• Why is coal a treasure? How is coal valuable?

3 Rs

• Read
• Recite
• Review

READ

• Read one section at a time.
• Locate the answers to your questions.
• Reread captions under pictures and look at the
  pictures.
• Monitor your own reading comprehension.
• Reread the passages that you did not understand.

Recall/Recite

• Write down the answers to your questions.
• Recall the information.
• Retell the text in your own words with a partner.

Review

• Go back and answer your questions from memory.
• Summarize the main points/big ideas.

SQ4R

• REFLECT!!!
• Compare new ideas with what you already know.
• Ask yourself How can I use this?
