• A. Many whites refused to accept changes to
  their society

• Formed to terrorize blacks
• Attempted to keep blacks from voting, attending
  schools, or prospering economically

• New Labor System Develops
• A. Sharecroppers
• Farmers who would work land owned by plantations
  owners and turn over a portion of their crops as
  rent.
• Kept poor farmers poor and dependent of large
  land owners

• Farmers who owned their own tools and rented land
  from plantation owners.
• After a bad season most tenant farmers were
  forced to become sharecroppers
