Title: The Spiral of Archimedes-you will create a project with these!

1
The Spiral of Archimedes-you will create a
project with these!
Get a long sheet from the front. Write your
name on it! I will hand out an index card and
a blank sheet of paper.
Due Friday, November 18th, Grace day Monday
November 28th
2
Good day. Everyone should have a sheet from the
front. Read over it several times (Until the
Calculations part). Discuss it. I will call
on someone to read a part of it and help to
explain each part to the class. 5 minutes
I will show you some examples, but the
instructions are the instructions. Dont worry
about what the spiral looks like right now, just
be aware of the rubric of points in each part.
Even if you are not an artist, everyone can make
an A just by following the rubric and making
sure that you put everything in that you are
supposed to.

Mrs. Sermons must carry 200 of these, they cannot
be too heavy or bulky (thats why the ½
POSTER14 x 22!). Also, if they roll up, its
too hard to manage. Here is what a whole a half
poster looks like. You will have to re-do it
with the correct size and material. It will also
be LATE.

Background should be totally colored-do not use
colored posters and count it as being colored.
Need other objects so that the scene will make
sense. Anything round(ish) can be replaced with a
spiral. DO NOT COPY PICTURES OR TRACEI WILL
RESEARCH IT!!! This should be your own creation,
and original work.

I will demonstrate what a whole and a half looks
like.

MUST SEE THE SPIRALING LINES. If you color over
them, you cannot get a grade for it! Add-ons
would be stickers, pre-made spirals, etc. unless
you clear it with me.

The sheet that you picked up will be the one that
you turn in. Do not write on the front until you
are ready to use it with your project. Sometimes
your sheet comes off, so make sure that you also
write your name period on the poster.

You will only need the measurements for ONE
spiral. One measurement MUST BE A LEGITIMATE
FRACTION. Forexample 2½ should be written as
(Convert to a ratio)DO NOT USE 1 OR ½!

Each day counts. Even if you dont come to class
the next day, you must bring it by. I will grade
with a ruler and an index card. DO NOT SUBMIT
FAKE MEASUREMENTS.

There will be a 1st, 2nd, 3rd place for each
class and an overall Grand Prize. The prizes are
bonus points. Other teachers will help to judge.

Your sheet will be turned in, so do not mark on
it today or use it for scratch or examples. Mrs.
Sermons will not give you another one. You will
have to get a copy from Weebly or copy someone
elses.
Lets look at how to make a spiral
6
Your project will include at least two whole
spirals or one whole and two halves. In order to
be considered whole or half, the last line MUST
BE drawn past the beginning.
This is considered one line past the beginning
Half
Whole
This would not be considered one line past the
beginning
It is better to do one more, just to be sure!

Spiral of Archimedes
F. Start with a right triangle, but make the
vertical leg shorter than the first
horizontal leg.
Vertical leg is shorter than horizontal leg. At
least one leg must be a fraction.
You will pick one of your spirals and measure the
base and the height of the first triangle. From
these, you will generate all the other
calculation (DO NOT MEASURE THE OTHER ACTUAL
LENGTHS, JUST CALCULATE!) I will show you an
example, but you cannot use my measurements, come
up with your own. You must describe the OBJECT
and say what UNITS you are using (inches, cm, mm,
etc.) Fill in those blanks!
9
  • Use a pencil for the calculations.
  • Describe OBJECT, Show UNITS.
  • At least one leg is a fraction.
  • No mixed fractions or decimals.
  • Show math. You cannot use my example lengths.
  • Show work.
  • Use exact valuescan be fractions, proper or
    improper. Leave in radical form.
  • Do not reduce. Do not change

You will look for a pattern, so it needs to stay
the same.
For example, if these are my measurements
10
Suggestion put smaller one first.
Notice smaller one stays the same.
These are MY measurement. YOURS will be
different!

___________________ Please read (LOUDLY) J
You will look for the pattern under the radical.
For example, you would say Underneath the
radical, the numerator increases by and the
denominator
Now, we will look at some examples!
