Title: Fact: What I Know

1
Fact What I Know
  • Facts are statements that give accurate
    information about a topic.
  • A fact can be proven true through observation,
checking a reference book or source, and testing
    the ideas with an experiment.

In May of 1950, a wildfire burned for five days
in the Lincoln National Forest in New Mexico.
Firefighters found an injured bear cub clinging
to a scorched tree. The firefighters cared for
the cub until he was healed. They named the
little bear Smokey.

Soccer players use their feet to control the
ball. The goalie is the only player that can use
their hands. Each team wears a different color.

Basketball players dribble the ball with their
hands. The objective is to get the ball into the
hoop or net. A foul shot is made from the free
throw line.

Opinion What I Think
  • Opinions express a persons feelings, ideas, or
    beliefs about someone or something.
  • An opinion cannot be proven true.
  • People have different opinions, and they do not
    always agree with one another.

Learning about fire safety is one of the best
ways kids can help prevent forest fires. Saving
the plants and animals that live in a forest is
important. Each person needs to do their part by
following safe, responsible practices when they
are camping and hiking.
26
Words that Signal an Opinion
pretty ugly
important worthless
all, must, never
good bad
like dislike
think, feel, believe
27
Appearance
pretty/ugly
Marine iguanas are so homely, even Charles Darwin
described them as hideous-looking and most
disgusting, clumsy lizards.
28
Value
Important/worthless
It is important that humans protect the Galapagos
tortoise. The largest living tortoise can weigh
500 pounds and measure 6 feet from head to toe.
29
Quality
good/bad
On land they walk with a waddle and appear to be
very clumsy, but in the air, they are among the
most graceful of sea birds.
30
Think/ Feel/ Belief
I think baby Galapagos sea lions are adorable.
They are playful, friendly creatures that often
swim with divers.
31
Preference
like/dislike
Galapagos fur seals love resting on rocky, rugged
shores with plenty of shade. They hate heat.
32
All/ Must/ Never
Everyone must see the cuddly Galapagos penguin.
It is the smallest and most northern penguin of
all the penguin species.
33
Distinguishing Fact and Opinion in Nonfiction
34
Authors Purpose in Nonfiction
Authors of nonfiction write for different
purposes. Some of them write to help a reader
learn information about a topic like the life of
a firefighter. Others may write to influence a
readers thinking about a topic such as the fire
safety. Thoughtful readers pay close attention
to the facts in nonfiction and use them to learn
and make informed decisions and judgments.
35
Questions Readers Askto Determine Fact and
Opinion
  • What is the authors main purpose for writing
    this text?
  • What facts are expressed in the text?
  • How could you check the facts?
  • What opinions are stated in the text?
  • Which words help us identify a thought, feeling,
    or belief?
  • What can you tell about the authors point of
view from the details found in the text?

36
Fact or Opinion?
Fires can destroy houses.
37
Fact or Opinion?
I think firefighters are brave.
38
Smoke JumpersFact or Opinion?
Smoke jumpers are firefighters who parachute into
a forest to help fight a forest fire. I believe
smoke jumpers are the worlds bravest people.
Everyone should thank them for protecting forests.

An Opinionated Citizen
Dear Editor I am concerned about the recent
hiring of Fiona Flame to our citys fire
department. Firefighting is hard work and very
dangerous. Everyone knows women are not as
strong as men. At a mere 5 feet 2 inches and 118
pounds, Fiona would have a hard time saving
lives. The heavy gear and equipment would easily
tire her out. How could she possibly pull a
250-pound trapped man from a two-story, burning
building? I think the fire department has
made a big mistake. Our citizens lives are at
risk. I hope our mayor and city council rethink
their decision before someone gets hurt.
Sincerely, Scared Upstairs
