Prime Ministers Initiative for International
Education (PMI)

• To secure the UKs position as a leader in
  international education and to sustain the
  managed growth of UK international education
  delivered in the UK and overseas.
• The strategy for PMI Phase 2 has four
  interconnected strands
• Marketing and communications to position the UK
  as a leader in international education and to
  increase the number of international students
  undertaking UK education
• Ensuring the quality of the student experience
• Developing strategic partnerships and alliances
  and
• Reducing exposure to risks arising from the
  volatility of the market.

UKIERI

• UK-India Education Research Initiative
  announced by Tony Blair in September 2005 Delhi
  summit, as key plank of bilateral strategic
  engagement.
• UK and India to become each others preferred
  partner in education through co-operation in
  three strands - Research and Higher Education,
  Professional and Technical Skills, and Schools.
• UK government has committed 12 million over
  five years to support the Initiative, bulk of
  funding going to HE.
• Cross-Whitehall supported by the DfES, FCO,
  Office of Science and Technology and the British
  Council
• Government of India bodies such as University
  Grants Commission and CSIR/DBT have made strong
  commitments to UKIERI and we are optimistic of
  matching funding, for example through mechanisms
  such as the UK India Joint Science and Innovation
  Council.

Role of Business

• Partnership with private sector vital in
  maximising impact and sustainability
• British Council leading on developing corporate
  partnerships for the Initiative.
• BAE Systems, BP, GSK and Shell have become
  overall Corporate Champions of the Initiative
  making major cash and in-kind contributions.
• We are also developing partnerships in
  individual activities, e.g. KPMG is keystone
  partner in Financial Services Skills Exchange.

Working with our Corporate Champions

• Our four corporate champions have each made major
  commitments on cash and in-kind support for the
  Initiative.
• Typically, each company is supporting with UKIERI
  with cash support of 500,000 over five years
  with a commitment to seek a similar value of
  in-kind support (e.g. training / work placement
  opportunities, schools materials, etc.)
• We are now working with each of the Corporate
  Champions to jointly design a programme of
  participation which meets their interests.
• Although the Initiative is focussed on Higher
  Education and Research, Corporate Champions can
  also opt support schools activities and UKIERIs
  professional and technical training links.
• Research domains of interest to the Corporate
  Champions are listed on calls for bids
  circulated to universities and available on
  UKIERI website
• Where Corporate Champions already have research
  relationships defined in one country (mostly the
  UK currently), we are working directly to help
  broker relationships with partner institutions in
  the second country.
• Corporate Champions are being offered the chance
  to offer their input into the evaluation of all
  proposed Higher Education Research projects,
  and an overall role in the project governance.

Project Typology

• UKIERI projects are essentially investments in
  reciprocal mobility of staff, faculty and
  researchers rather then direct funding of
  research. Project awards will be made by the
  Project Board in the following categories
• 1. Research and Higher Education
• Major Research Awards
• Up to 500K, five awards in first year, each
  three years duration
• Standard Research Awards
• 10K-150K, 20 awards in first year
• Collaborative Delivery Awards
• 10 grants of up to 20,000 in first year for
  development of CPD projects and jointly delivered
  Masters and Bachelor degree programmes.
• Project Formulation Travel Grants
• Limited funding for exploratory visits in both
  directions.

• 2. Professional and Technical Skills
• Partnerships between UK and Indian Further and
  Higher Education centres of excellence, with
  focus on Financial Services and Creative
  Industries.
• Initial funding of two partnerships each in
  Financial Services, Fashion Design and Film and
  Animation.
• Partnership mechanisms
• joint curriculum design and delivery
• work attachments
• faculty and student exchanges
• masterclasses
• discussions on skills frameworks, joint
  accreditation and recognition of professional
  qualifications
• 3. Schools
• Links between clusters of schools (up to 10
  schools in each cluster) for collaborative
  projects in
• environment, ICT, etc.
• Seminars and other events in two strands
  School Leadership and ICT in the Classroom.
