Thickness PlanerOperation Safety

• The thickness planer is used to machine stock to
  a desired thickness.
• A planar is sized according to the widest stock
  that can be machined.

Pre-operation Safety

• Stock should be at least 12in. long or several
  inches longer than the distance between the
  centers of the feed rolls.

Pre-operation Safety

• Adjust the machine to correct thickness of cut
  before turning on the machine.
• The adjusting wheel raises or lowers the bed.

Pre-operation Safety

• Measure the material and adjust the bed
  accordingly.
• An average cut is about 1/16in.

Pre-operation Safety

• Surface only new lumber that is free of loose
  knots and serious defects.
• Do not look into the throat of the planer when it
  is running.
• Plane with the grain or at a slight angle, never
  attempt to plane across the grain.

Operation safety

• Handle and hold stock only in an area beyond the
  ends of the table.

Operation Safety

• Stand to one side of the work being fed through
  the machine.
• Do not feed stock of different thickness side by
  side through the machine.
• If the machine is not working properly, shut off
  the power at once and inform your instructor.

Final Safety

• Always wear safety glasses or shield when
  operating the planer.
• Keep your eyes on your work, do not be
  distracted.
• If there are any concerns, consult with your
  instructor before operating the planer.
