  • Phil Rubin, National Chapter Field Rep.
  • 2007 National Convention Orlando, FL

2
What are we doing here?
  • Discussing some basic, BIG concepts.
  • Talking about the elements of a great Membership
    Education Program
  • Discussing the process for making your own great
    MEP
  • Answering any questions you might have

3
BASICCONCEPTS
4
Basic Concepts
  • Understanding vs. Memorization
  • Village vs. VP-only Process
  • Written and Voted On vs. On-the-fly
  • Bonding with Chapter vs. Within Class
  • Policy on Hazing

5
ELEMENTS OFA GOOD PROGRAM
6
Elements of a Good Program
  • Membership Selection Plan
  • Recruiting Plan
  • Teaching Plan
  • Continuing Education Plan

7
Membership Selection Plan
  • Literally What makes a great brother for our
chapter? Who are we looking for?
  • Might be a list of qualities, a summary,
    observations, or examples.
  • Should be the MANDATORY qualities, so dont get
    unnecessarily specific.

8
What Would We Put In Our Membership Selection
Plan?
9
Recruiting Plan
  • Now that you know what you are looking for, how
    do you recruit them?
  • This should be a DETAILED, WRITTEN plan
    containing
  • Every advertisement, announcement, etc.
  • Every event and how to run them
  • A schedule for the whole recruitment period,
    including voting on bids, etc.

10
Some Notes About Recruiting
  • Go beyond just social events were not just a
    social fraternity.
  • Recruiting involves everyone. Attendance at
recruiting events should be mandatory and very
    active.
  • Recruit based on the qualities you listed as
    making ideal brothers
  • QUALITY over QUANTITY

11
Some More Notes About Recruiting
  • Hold a discussion about recruiting essentials at
the very beginning of the year.
  • Personal invitations use them!
  • Recruit with interactive events as much as
possible. Dinner is better than watching a
    movie!
  • Recruiting isnt just about people showing
interest in you its about you showing interest
    in them.

12
Teaching Plan
  • Now we have some candidates. How do we teach
    them?
  • What is our goal here?

13
To Make Great Brothers
Teach them to
  • Get to know the brothers as individuals
  • Understand the Fraternity what it stands for
    and why it matters
  • Understand their obligations in joining Kappa
    Kappa Psi
  • Better themselves as band members and people as
    described in your MSP
  • Help them experience the Fraternity they are
    joining

14
Teaching Plans Should Include
  • Complete CALENDAR
  • Detailed SYLLABUS
  • INSTRUCTIONS for VP and Chapter on every detail
    of everything
  • Full LESSON PLANS
  • Copies of ALL tests
  • The answer to why? for each item

15
Continuing Ed. Plan
  • Okay, weve identified great band members,
recruited them, and taught them to be great
    brothers. All done?
  • What IS Continuing Education?
  • Any activity that helps to make us better
brothers or band members, helping us to fulfill
the ideals of Kappa Kappa Psi and in our
    Membership Selection Plan.

16
Continuing Education
  • What are some examples?

17
Writing Your Plan
  • Make the Continuing Education Plan similar to a
    cook book.
  • Lots of options to choose from, with detail
instructions for each one you might choose.
  • Also, be sure to have some staples things you
    do regularly.
  • Continuing Education should be on-going, with
something happening every few weeks at least.

18
MAKING THAT GREAT M.E.P.
