• History
• From the ancient Greek word lead
• First discovered in 1778 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele
• Not actually isolated until 1781 by Peter Jacob
  Hjelm.

Characteristics

• Very high melting temperature (6th highest).
• Burns at temps above 600 degrees Celsius.
• Essential element for the survival of plants and
  animals.
• Greatly increases strength of steel at high temps

Applications

• Used in high strength steel alloys
• Aircraft parts, missiles
• Catalyst in petroleum refining
• Important element in plant nutrition
• Electrical applications
• Furnace parts
• Many applications dealing with high heat.

Disadvantages

• Dust produced from mining can be toxic.
• Repeated exposure can cause skin and eye
  irritation.
