Navy life
Nikolay became a Navy cadet in 1856. As a cadet,
he also was trained in music. One was
Korsakovs heroes was a very prominant russian
composer, Mily Balakirev who is pictured above.

Compositions and Teaching
Korsakov did not know the rules of advanced music
theory or part writing. 1865 Wrote first
symphony. 1872 Wrote first opera. 1871 Was
appointed professor of Composition and
Instrumentation at St. Petersburg Conservatory
In order to succeed, he taught himself the rules
of music theory and orchestral writing.

Sheherazade
One of Korsakovs most famous pieces,
Sheherazade. Based on the Persian story, A
Thousand and One Nights Story line The sultan
is going to execute his wife, Sheherazade. The
only way for her to stay alive is by telling her
husband a story. The story has many
cliffhangers, which will hopefully lead to her
staying alive.
