- PigHogSwine All are generic terms referring
to the same animal. - Boar a male pig
- Gilt a female pig which has never had
offspring. - Sow a female pig which has produced offspring.
- Piglet a newborn pig
3A pigs most acute sense is smell.

4What do pigs eat?
- The main ingredient in pig feed is corn.
- Other ingredients include soybean meal, barley,
wheat, hay, fat/oils and lots of minerals and
vitamins.
- Pigs are omnivores. They will eat anything
humans eat..
..and a lot more!
5Pigs are really smart!
Pigs are generally extremely intelligent. They
can learn tricks better than dogs.
World Book Encyclopedia rates a pig the seventh
most intelligent in the animal kingdom.
6Pigs are really clean.
- Pigs do not have sweat glands.
- Thats why they roll around in the mud or water
when it is hot. - When the wind blows, the water from the mud
evaporates, and cools them.
- The dried mud acts as a layer of sunscreen to
protect their skin from the sun.
7Baby Pigs
- Generally 8 to 12 piglets are born to a litter.
- The largest number of piglets born in a single
litter was 34. - The duration of a pigs pregnancy is 114 days
-(3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days). - A sow can have a litter of piglets every 5 to 6
months.
- Most sows have two litters per year.

The largest pig was a 2,552 pound porker named
Big Bill, who stood 59 at the shoulder.
When hogs go to market, they are sold by the
pound. Historically, hogs are worth 35 to 55
cents per pound.
