Title: Was It Really About a Pig

1
Was It Really About a Pig?
  • The San Juan Island Dispute
  • (more commonly known as the Pig War)

2
Dig Deep CBA
  • Washington States Social Studies Classroom-Based
Assessments (CBAs) were designed by the Office of
Superintendent of Public Instruction in response
    to RCW 28A.230.09
  • The Dig Deep CBA is an opportunity to
participate in research, gather evidence from
primary sources, and draw conclusions about a
    historical question
  • The following Webquest provides a practice
experience in developing a product which will
satisfy CBA requirements. During this practice,
students will work as members of a group.
Following the practice, however, students will
prepare a CBA product on their own

3
A Social Studies WebQuest
  • Travel back to the days of old, before Washington
    became a state
  • The United States and Great Britain have signed
the Treaty of Washington, setting the northern
boundary of the United States at the 49th
    Parallel.
  • OOPS! The treaty didnt make it clear how the
boundary would pass through the San Juan Islands!
  • A series of events occurs, involving a pig, which
nearly starts a war to decide who really owns
    the islands.

4
Task
  • Your task, as a group of four, will be to gather
historical evidence of the events surrounding the
Pig War, draw a conclusion from your research,
and create a timeline of the event.
  • You will all work together to create the final
products of this assignment. Each of you will
take on ALL of the following roles

5
Task (continued)
  • Historian One who writes or compiles a
chronological record of events. (This means
    taking lots of notes!)
  • Chronicler A recorder of historical record.
(In other words, the graphic organizer!)
  • Historiographer A person who analyzes and
evaluates historical information. (You will draw
conclusions about the evidence you research)
  • Archivist Someone who places, stores, or copies
information into an archive. (Okay, this is a
fancy way of saying you will put the project
together in a neat, attractive manner.
