Company Background
  • The Toyota Motor Co. Ltd (TMC) was first
    established in 1937
  • In the late 1950s, with the efforts of Taïchi
    Ohno, production systems were improved,
    culminating in the establishment of the 'Toyota
    Production System (TPS) based on the principles
    of Jidoka, Just-in-time and Kaizen.
  • Production of vehicles outside Japan began in
    1959 at a small plant in Brazil, and continued
    with a growing network of overseas plants.
  • Today, the Toyota embraces the three major car
    markets of Japan, North America and Europe and is
    the world's third largest manufacturer of
    automobiles.

  • 1983, Toyota undertakes major reengineering
    project to consolidate its position in US markets
    and replaces Corona with the aimed-at-US-markets
    Camry.
  • 1984, saw no changes for the Camry, as this was
    the first full year of production for Toyota's
    new midsize family car.
  • 1985, saw updates such as a shuffling of colors,
    a slight bump in the engine's output (to 95
    horsepower) and the adoption of flush-mounted
    headlights.
  • 1986, the successful Camry due for major upgrade.
