    launched from Kennedy Space Center NASA lost
    contact with the spacecraft minutes before
    scheduled Florida landing.
  • Seven astronauts -- six Americans and one Israeli
    died.

  • California Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, second
    governor in U.S. history to be recalled. On
    October 7, 2003.
  • Bodybuilder-turned-actor Republican Arnold

  • July 18, Eagle County, Colorado, authorities
    charged Los Angeles Lakers star guard Kobe Bryant
    with sexual assault.
  • November 20, authorities searched Neverland ranch
    in Santa Barbara, music icon Michael Jackson was
    booked on suspicion of child molestation.
  • Both men, free on bail and awaiting trials, have
    proclaimed their innocence.

Smart Abduction
  • Summer 2002, Utah and much of America focused
    intently on the fate of 14-year-old Elizabeth
    Smart, abducted from her home.
  • March 12, 2003, Salt Lake City police recovered
    Smart and arrested her abductor, Brian David
    Mitchell, a self-described prophet who had done
    some work at the Smart family home.
  • Elizabeth appearing alongside President Bush as
    he signed a child protection bill.

Uday Qusay
  • Uday and Qusay Hussein, sons of Saddam Hussein
    were killed July 22 in a firefight, after a
    tipster betrayed the location of their hideout in
    Mosul.
  • Bush called their deaths proof "the former regime
    is gone and will not be coming back."

    the Pentagon released photos and video of the
    dead bodies of the two brothers,
