Columbia

• Sixteen days after space shuttle Columbia
  launched from Kennedy Space Center NASA lost
  contact with the spacecraft minutes before
  scheduled Florida landing.
• Seven astronauts -- six Americans and one Israeli
  died.

California Recall

• California Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, second
  governor in U.S. history to be recalled. On
  October 7, 2003.
• Bodybuilder-turned-actor Republican Arnold
  Schwarzenegger, was elected to replace Davis.

Terror War

• Blasts linked to al Qaeda killed U.S. and
  coalition members, as well as scores of Muslims,
  in coordinated attacks in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
  Casablanca, Morocco and Jakarta, Indonesia.
• Bush administration claimed criticized for
  overlooking the war against al Qaeda in favor of
  its effort to topple Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

Massive Blackout

• 60 million Americans and Canadians lost
  electricity August 14 in one of the biggest
  blackouts in U.S. history.
• Outages stretched from Ohio through much of
  Pennsylvania, Vermont, New York, Michigan and the
  Canadian province of Ontario.

SARS Scare

• In February, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome,
  or SARS -- had become part of the global
  vernacular as it spread rapidly around Asia and
  to North America and Europe.
• By the time the World Health Organization
  declared an end to the outbreak in July, SARS
  claimed the lives of more than 750 people and
  infected more than 8,000 in 25 countries.

Gay Rights

• Religion. Law and politics intersected frequently
  in 2003 over the rights of homosexuals.
• The Episcopal Church became a hub of controversy
  by approving the Rev. V. Gene Robinson, who is
  openly gay, as its next bishop of New Hampshire.
• Massachusetts Supreme Court, paved the way for
  gay marriages and virtually assured that gay
  rights would be a major political issue in the
  2004 election.

Celebrity Scandal

• 2003 two high-profile Celebrity sex scandals
  became a focus for the media, and for legal
  authorities.
• July 18, Eagle County, Colorado, authorities
  charged Los Angeles Lakers star guard Kobe Bryant
  with sexual assault.
• November 20, authorities searched Neverland ranch
  in Santa Barbara, music icon Michael Jackson was
  booked on suspicion of child molestation.
• Both men, free on bail and awaiting trials, have
  proclaimed their innocence.

Smart Abduction

• Summer 2002, Utah and much of America focused
  intently on the fate of 14-year-old Elizabeth
  Smart, abducted from her home.
• March 12, 2003, Salt Lake City police recovered
  Smart and arrested her abductor, Brian David
  Mitchell, a self-described prophet who had done
  some work at the Smart family home.
• Elizabeth appearing alongside President Bush as
  he signed a child protection bill.

Uday Qusay

• Uday and Qusay Hussein, sons of Saddam Hussein
  were killed July 22 in a firefight, after a
  tipster betrayed the location of their hideout in
  Mosul.
• Bush called their deaths proof "the former regime
  is gone and will not be coming back."
• In order to convince a disbelieving Iraqi public,
  the Pentagon released photos and video of the
  dead bodies of the two brothers,
