Whippos Views on the Contingency Leadership
Theory
  • Whippo claims that styles and situations are the
foundation of the research done surrounding the
    contingency leadership theory.
  • He says that Northouse (2013) claimed that the
contingency theory approach attempts to match
leaders to adequate situations, or changes the
situation to fit the leaders style in an effort
to increase the opportunity for successful
    leadership.

More about the Contingency Theory
  • Jeffery Whippo says that the contingency theory
goes on to state that some leaders are better in
specific situations than others and that the more
control the leader has, the more effectively they
will be able to distinguish the situation at
    hand.
  • He says that according to Fiedlers Contingency
    Model, Situational Favorability signals the
amount of control a leader has over his/her
    followers.
  • Additionally, he says Fiedler classified 3
    sub-elements in determining favorability
    leader-member relations, task structure, and
    position power.

Whippo Describes Leader-Member Relations as the
Most Powerful Sub-Element to Determine
Favorability
  • Jeff Whippo describes leader-member relations as
the most powerful of the sub-elements in
    determining overall situational favorability.
  • What is measured is whether the relationship
between the leader and the followers is generally
cooperative and friendly or antagonistic and
    difficult.
  • Jeff says that when leaders rate leader-member
relations high, they have the support of their
followers and can therefore rely on their loyalty.

6
The Weakest Of the Three Sub-Elements Is Position
Power as Per Whippo
  • According to Jeff Whippo, the weakest of the
    three sub-elements is position power.
  • He says that titles of authority, the authority
to administer rewards and punishments, and the
legitimacy to conduct performance appraisals on
followers have greater position power than
    leaders that lack these elements.
  • He believes that the relative weights of these
three components are taken together so that they
can be used for creating a continuum of
    situational favorability.
