WHAT IS BARIATRIC SURGERY
Bariatric surgery is an operation that helps you
lose weight by making changes to your digestive
system. Some types of bariatric surgeries make
your stomach smaller, allowing you to eat and
drink less at one time and making you feel full
sooner. Other bariatric surgeries also change
your small intestinethe part of your body that
absorbs calories and nutrients from foods and
beverages

Intragastric Balloon surgery
Intragastric balloon placement is a weight-loss
procedure that involves placing a saline-filled
silicone balloon in your stomach. This helps you
lose weight by limiting how much you can eat and
making you feel fuller faster. The intragastric
balloon procedure may be an option if you have
concerns about your weight, and diet and exercise
haven't worked for you. Like other weight-loss
procedures, an intragastric balloon requires
commitment to a healthier lifestyle. You need to
make permanent healthy changes to your diet and
get regular exercise to help ensure the long-term
success of the procedure

Gastric sleeve surgery
Gastric sleeve also known as sleeve gastrectomy,
a type of weight loss (bariatric) surgery that
renders the stomach smaller. In gastric sleeve
surgery, over half of the stomach is removed,
leaving a thin vertical sleeve, or tube, in place
of the normally-sized stomach. This results in an
inability to eat the same volumes of food as
prior to the procedure. Weight loss surgery is
only performed for those who are severely obese,
generally with a body mass index (BMI) greater
than 40. Sleeve gastrectomy has been successful
at helping many obese people lose over half of
their excess weight. After the surgery, it is
important to work with a dietician to establish a
sound nutrition plan, because of changing dietary
capacity and the possibility that certain
nutrients may not be well absorbed. Risks of
weight loss surgery include infections and blood
clots. The gastric sleeve procedure is permanent
and is not reversible

Single Incision Sleeve Gastrectomy
SILS is an advanced, minimally invasive technique
used in bariatric surgery to ease post-operative
discomfort and reduce complications. During
traditional laparoscopic procedures, surgeons
make four to five incisions in the abdomen to
access the digestive tract. SILS builds on this
foundation, but uses a single incision hidden by
the belly button instead of multiple openings.
The Single Incision Laparoscopic Sleeve (SILS) is
rapidly becoming a popular laparoscopic weight
loss surgery in INDIA. There are not a lot of
doctors that can perform this laparoscopic
procedure, which is why LOC is pleased to
announce that Dr Shashank Shah is one of the few
qualified surgeons to perform this procedure!

Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass Surgery
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass A surgical procedure
which may be done for severe obesity. The
procedure involves cutting the stomach in two to
create a pouch out of the smaller proximal (near)
portion of the stomach, attaching it to the small
intestine, bypassing a large part of the stomach
and all of the duodenum. The procedure may help
with weight loss because the stomach pouch is too
small to hold much food and skipping the duodenum
reduces the absorption of fat which is rich in
calories. The procedure may be done
by laparoscopy. Also called a Roux-en-Y
anastomosis or Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy.

Mini Gastric Bypass
In this operation the top of the stomach is
stapled to form a thin tube (30ml to 50ml in
size). The thin tube becomes the new, smaller
stomach and is completely separate to the rest of
the stomach. This stomach is then sewn to a loop
of the small intestine, bypassing the first part
of the intestine called the duodenum and
approximately 150200cm of the bowel. The rest of
the stomach and upper part of the small intestine
remains in the body but is no longer used for
food digestion.

Duodenal Switch
The duodenal switch (DS) procedure, gastric
reduction duodenal switch (GRDS), is a weight
loss surgery procedure that is composed of a
restrictive and a malabsorptive aspect. The
restrictive portion of the surgery involves
removing approximately 70 of the stomach (along
the greater curvature) and most of
the duodenum. The malabsorptive portion of the
surgery reroutes a lengthy portion of the small
intestine, creating two separate pathways and one
common channel. The shorter of the two pathways,
the digestive loop, takes food from the stomach
to the common channel. The much longer pathway,
the biliopancreatic loop, carries bile from
the liver to the common channel. The common
channel is the portion of small intestine,
usually 75-150 centimeters long, in which the
contents of the digestive path mix with
the bile from the biliopancreatic loop before
emptying into the large intestine. The objective
of this arrangement is to reduce the amount of
time the body has to capture calories from food
in the small intestine and to selectively limit
the absorption of fat. As a result, following
surgery, these patients absorb only approximately
20 of the fat they consume
