  • This book will frame Generation Y (children born
between 1978-1991) for corporate leaders and
managers at time when the corporate world is
desperate to recruit and retain worked in this
age group. It will debunk dozens of myths,
including that young employees have no sense of
loyalty, won't do grunt work, won't take
direction, want to interact only with computers,
    and are only about money.

Headlines in the news
  • Schools are stuck in the 20th century. Students
have rushed into the 21st. How can schools catch
up and provide students with a relevant
    education?

Who said that.
  • I am not complacent at all John. I have gone
through experiences such as this for a very long
time. I know I am right. I make the good
argument, write the wise articles, and the
persuasive letters. And sometimes I feel as
though I am preaching to a stack of wood. People
do not easily embrace change. Convincing them to
turn in a new direction requires a patience and
persistence that tax everyone. It does not help
matters that the course we are attempting to
follow could get us all hanged
  • Ben Franklin talking to John Adams , June 7, 1776

16
  • Educators need to be genuine, authentic leaders
that will infuse meaning in what we do as
teachers. We all need to tell our success
stories, assist others in helping, influence and
    inspire people around us.

17
What needs to change about our curriculum when
our students have the ability to reach audiences
far beyond our classroom walls? Will Richardson

Our students need a safe place to fail
30
Our students need a safe place to fail
  • I would argue, that "losing" is an important step
in the educational process, as long as it's
viewed in the school community as an opportunity
    for improving one's skills
  • Failing can be a powerful tool for academic and
    personal success
  • One of the things we need to change in the
schools is the attitude that success comes
easily. Students need to know that to succeed
    they need to work hard.
  • NOT EVERYONE Gets A TROPHY

31
What did they say about?
32
Creativity and Innovation
  • What Does Sir Ken Robinson have to say about
    CREATIVITY?
  • If you are not prepared to be wrongyou will
NEVER come up with anything original

33
Kids need to be able to take a chance and be
prepared to be wrong
Sir Ken
Robinson
If you are not prepared to be wrongyou will
NEVER come with anything original

The fact is, our young people are woefully under
prepared for the demands of todays workplace,

6. Create a Learning Community
57
"What is a learning community?" Works together
to share and build an enriching environment. A
safe place to try, fail, and try again. A
learning community takes risks together. An
environment that fosters innovation and
creativity. A way to discuss "Big Ideas." An
atmosphere of respect where people are
comfortable sharing their ideas. A place where
we can learn from our own and each others
mistakes and feel comfortable doing so. A place
where everyone is interested in learning. A
place to share. Exchanging ideas.

replied ,SIX. And was in. A second member came
to the door and the doorman said, SIX. The

What is 21st century professional development?
113
  • Integrate Proof of Concept into ALL Staff
    Development

114
Proof of Concept
  • Consider a tool you want to explore
  • Select a partner to create a "mock up" of
something you might use in your role as an
    educatoror that students might create
    themselves.
  • Consider collaborating with others who teach
different grades or different subjects Remember
you need to have a product in 30 minutes, so
don't let little details bog you down.

115
  • Create a proof-of-concept that meets the
    following criteria
  • Utilizes at least one Web 2.0 tool
  • Is tailored for a specific educational purpose
  • Illustrates how you or students would use the
    tool
  • Demonstrates the concept sufficiently that other
    educators might implement it

116

  • Zach started his own nonprofit organization four
years ago after a hurricane hit Florida. He asked
his mother if they could donate their water
bottles, and he gathered more from neighbors, an
earnest little redheaded boy pulling his red
wagon behind him. By the end, they had 27
    truckloads of aid.

119
  • Zach has met three presidents and was invited to
President George W. Bush's farewell address this
winter. Last night, he was scheduled to visit
Elton John at his concert at Nationals Park and
accept a 25,000 check. And an Emmy-award winning
journalist, Michael Guillen, is making a 5

And finally
  • Are YOU capable of bringing about this change?

124
If you are that ONE..
  • from the book The Backdoor to Enlightenment
  • Eight Steps to Living Your Dreams and Changing
    Your World

125
Will you be the 10th person?
  • For every nine people who denounce innovation,
    only one will encourage it.
  • For every nine people who do things the way they
have always been done, only one will ever wonder
if there is a better way.
  • For every nine people who stand in line in front
of a locked building, only one will ever come
around and check the back door.
  • Our progress as a species rests squarely on the
shoulders of that tenth person. The nine are
satisfied with things they are told are valuable.
  • Person 10 determines for himself what has value.
