Title: Efficacy and Technophobia

1
Efficacy and Technophobia
2
Self-efficacy and performance
  • Defined as self perceptions of ability to perform
    a given behavior (Bandura 1977)
  • S.E. ? intensity and persistence
  • S.E. often predict behavior better than past
    performance
  • Treatment promote change in behavior through
    changes in S.E.
  • S.E. is malleable

3
Self-efficacy can be influenced by
  • Cognitive appraisal on ones achievment
  • Difficulty of the task
  • Amount of effort used
  • Situational support
  • Pattern and rate of success
  • Vicarious experience (indirect experience)
  • How others cope with their problems
  • How similar are the model to the learner
  • How clear are the results
  • Verbal Persuasion
  • Emotional/Physiological arousal

4
S.E. and anxiety
  • Perceived self-efficacy to exercise control over
potentially threatening / aversive events plays a
    central role in anxiety arousal
  • If S.E. in this aspect is low, then computer-
using does not imply the absence of anxiety
  • As computers are ever increasing, the avoidance
strategy is impossible, and techno phobia can be
    even more prevalent.

5
Locus of control
  • Whether ones future behavior can be controlled
by themselves (internal) or the environment
    (external)
  • Computer skills to be acquirable
  • Vs computer skills as entity (something you
    either good or bad at)

6
Implication on training
  • How would you differentiate between two kinds of
trainingone is for performance, and the
    otheris for self-efficacy ?
