Green Initiative for energy efficient
eco-products in the construction industry
Project EIE-05-024 Acronym GREEN-ITDuration

GREEN-IT Objectives and Methodology
  • Objective of this action is to raise awareness on
EU labelling schemes in the building sector, in
order to encourage the application of energy
    efficient construction products in European
    buildings.
  • Aiming at the acceleration of the EU market
    transformation towards regulated Energy
    Performance of Buildings and improved
    Energy-Using Products manufactured with
    eco-design specifications, this project utilises
best practice in the construction products
manufacturing sector, as a means to motivate
industry to further compliance with the new EU
    legal framework needs.

GREEN-IT Objectives and Methodology
  • The basic approach for this action is the
application of self-regulatory measures, in order
    to use them as
  • initiatives for the production of energy
    efficient construction components (materials and
    systems),
  • promotion campaign instruments targeted to key
    market actors (construction products industry),
  • mechanisms to facilitate the implementation of
EU Directives focusing on energy use and
efficiency in the building sector (EPD and EuP).

GREEN-IT Main Tasks
  • The main tasks of the project are
  • review of the common construction practice in
EU buildings and use of construction products
    (conventional and innovative)
  • assessment of the most relevant energy
    performance indicators and benchmarks of
construction products of both common practice and
best practice, as well as their contribution to
the overall energy performance of buildings,
  • examination of existing labelling schemes
within the EU and world-wide and selection of the
most appropriate in view of the needs of the new
EPD and proposed EuP for eco-products
  • description of appropriate self-regulatory
mechanisms to involve the industrial sector in a
voluntary initiative aiming at energy efficient
    construction products
  • awareness raising and information activities,
including direct involvement among key market
    actors and decision makers

GREEN-IT Outcomes
  • The basic outcome of the project is the
    availability of energy benchmarked building
products in the European market. The label will
be developed to facilitate future transferability
to a range of building products, including
    integrated renewables. With this action,
    acceleration of the European market
transformation within the framework of regulated
energy performance of buildings will be enhanced,
whilst improvement of the competitiveness of
    European manufacturers will be considerable.
  • Furthermore, with the introduction of competitive
    benchmarking through labelling, manufacturers
will be encouraged to develop more energy
efficient and cost-effective products. With the
improvement of the energy effectiveness of
available products at European level for more
efficient buildings, economic benefits and energy
supply security will yield for the demand side,
the designers and engineers, the developers and
associations and all end users in general.
