- The LDS serves as a central point of access to a
wide assortment of digital numeric research data
files. - The collection covers a broad range of subject
areas with an emphasis on Social Sciences, Health
Sciences, Business and Economics. - Wherever possible, access to these resources is
provided through self-serve web interfaces e.g.
E-STAT, ICPSRDirect ,etc.
28Type of Research Data
- The data files contain quantitative research
data, including public use micro data, aggregate
data and time-series databases. - Library Data Service acquires data files as a
member of two major consortia - Statistics
Canada's Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) and
Inter-University Consortium for Political and
Social Research (ICPSR).
29Accessing the Data
- Access to the data files are restricted to
current McMaster University faculty, staff and
students for the purposes of teaching, research
and private study only. - All users seeking access to the survey data files
are required to complete a user agreement form at
the LDS before accessing the data files.
(Individuals who wish to make commercial use of
the data files should contact Statistics Canada
to obtain their own licensed copy of the data.) - The access to data is given on a CD/DVD-ROM, USB
drive etc or where ever possible, through
self-serve web interfaces such as ICPSRDirect etc.

Canada public use microdata files, databases and
geographic files. Use of these files is limited
to academic research and teaching purposes.
31Canadian Business Patterns
- Focus CBP contain data that reflect counts of
business establishments by 9 employment size
ranges and industry using the North American
Industry Classification System (NAICS). Before
December 2004, the data is also available using
the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC). -
- Geography Groupings Province/territory, Census
Division, Census subdivision and Census
Metropolitan Area - Data coverage 1988 2007.
32Financial Performance Indicators for Canadian
Business (FPICB)
- Focus FPICB is an authoritative reference source
of 15 key financial ratios by industry groupings
compiled from the North American Industry
Classification System (NAICS 2002). It is based
on up-to-date, reliable and comprehensive data on
Canadian businesses, derived from Statistics
Canada databases of financial statements. - Volume 1 covers large incorporated firms in both
the financial and non-financial sectors, at the
national level, with annual sales revenue
exceeding 25 million. - Volume 2 covers medium-sized incorporated firms
in the non-financial sector, at the national
level, with annual sales revenue between 5
million and 25 million. - Volume 3 covers small-sized incorporated firms in
the non-financial sector, at the national level,
with annual sales revenue between 30,000 and 5
million. - Data coverage 1994 2005.

- Focus The Inter-corporate ownership directory is
the most authoritative and comprehensive source
of information available on corporate ownership,
a unique directory of "who owns what" in Canada.
It tracks the ownership of the largest Canadian
corporations and provides up-to-date information
reflecting recent corporate takeovers and other
substantial changes. - The Inter-corporate ownership directory lists
more than 95,000 corporations, illustrating at a
glance the hierarchy of subsidiaries within each
corporate structure. The entries for each
corporation provide both the country of control
and the country of residence. As well, the
inclusion of the Standard Industrial
Classification code enables study by industrial
sector. - Data coverage 1995 2007.
