3Dual Mode Technology Overview
- What is Xplores Dual Mode Technology?
- Xplores Dual Mode AllVue (iX104C2DV) is a unique
mobile computer that integrates two (2) digitizer
technologies for dual input capabilities active
Pen (RF) and finger touch. - Measurable benefits are realized through enhanced
user functionality, added insurance and
standardization flexibility. - Xplores iX104C2DV external appearance is the
same as any other iX104 family model in order to
maintain uniformity in our product line-up.
4Dual Mode Technology-Key Benefits
- Xplores Dual Mode Technology was created to
address common concerns facing enterprise clients
today - Assurance of continual use - Enterprise clients
with mission critical applications want to have
the insurance of 2 digitizers so that in the
event of a loss or damage to the digital pen a
user can easily convert to touch input and
maintain operational status. - One Single Roll-out Company-wide Xplores Dual
Mode Systems can by deployed by enterprise
clients without the worry of operating system
load or hardware configuration. It can then be
left to the specific user groups to select the
operating mode (Active or Touch input) of the
machine based on their unique requirements while
maintaining corporate standards. - Different Usage Profiles End users will utilize
mobile computers in different ways depending on
whether they are in a vehicle, on a forklift or
outside working remotely. Xplores Dual mode
interface accommodates different input modes
needed by users in these varying environments.
For instance when mounted the system is running
under touch mode for safety purposes, when the
unit goes mobile it converts to pen mode for
digital inking, signature capture and improved
accuracy.
5Industry Challenge
- The Problem
- Commercially available LCD displays do not offer
enough brightness to make the display functional
in outdoors, or in other high ambient light
applications
Standard Display
Xplore AllVue
6Display Technology Alternatives
- Transmissive TFT LCDs are backlight based. They
are best for indoor readability with high
contrast and brightness but they offer poor
sunlight readability and poor battery life. - Reflective TFT LCDs are the best type for
extended battery life performance, but they
perform relatively poorly indoors. Although front
lights can provide enhanced readability in low to
moderate light conditions, they bring back
battery life issues and cause viewability
problems. Outdoor view ability is enhanced under
optimal external lighting conditions. - Transflective TFT LCDs offer a tradeoff in both
dark room and bright room conditions. Hence they
are weak in environments under low light
conditions and only provide benefits in ideal
external light conditions
7Alternative Solutions Proposed in the Market
- High Brightness-Increase the luminance of a
liquid crystal display by increasing the amount
and intensity of the backlight - The power consumption becomes very high, thermal
issues arise and cost soars - Increasing brightness merely lightens the overall
display. - The light and black areas become brighter which
means the contrast is actually lowered. - The human eye eventually becomes saturated with
brightness and stops responding to it.
Increasing the NIT count is not the most
effective and reliable answer to improving
overall view ability
8AllVue A Better Approach
- Contrast Ratio-Contrast ratio of a display in
high ambient lighting levels requires that the
reflections, both specular and diffuse, from
the display be carefully controlled - Contrast is what the human eye most easily
responds to and recognizes. - In addition reflectivity must be carefully
managed. - Thus, the challenge is not to increase brightness
but to increase contrast and manage reflectivity
levels.
9Xplores AllVue Technology
- The Xplore Solution
- Vastly reduces reflective light which causes
visual washout of the display image. - Greatly increases the overall contrast ratio.
- Enhances structural integrity by supporting the
LCD.
10Customer Benefits Xplores Dual Mode AllVue
- Multi Input Capabilities allows customers to
address multiple applications either touch or
active RF input with a single device thereby
maximizing initial investments and efficiencies
through single platform support - LCD That Can Actually Be Seen In The Field
maximizes user acceptance and usage which in turn
improves efficiencies associated with the project
objectives
11Dual Mode AllVue
- Xplores Dual Mode AllVue display provides
touch screen and active stylus input
functionality while substantially improving
outdoor viewing. - The result is a combination of benefits unique in
the Rugged Tablet PC market.
- 189 increase in contrast ratio

13Select Customer Comments
We selected Xplores rugged Tablet PC System
based on our needs for a rugged, reliable Tablet
PC that provided screens that were actually
viewable in varying outdoor lighting conditions
and provided ATEX safety certifications, stated
Major Peter J. Woudsma from the Royal Netherlands
Air Force.

According to Staff Sgt. Fred Itule, The iX104
proved to be the best solution for us for a
number of reasons the weight, portability, ease
of use, ruggedness and screen view ability.
14Select Customer Comments
A very important factor that influenced our
decision for the Xplore tablet, is the size of
the screen. It enables both the drivers and
customers to view more information, when they are
on-line reading dispatch notes. We also like the
element of the dual mode screen, as the drivers
often prefer to use the touch screen, states
David Williams, Systems Process Manager at Exel
UK Ltd.
Readability of display in varying conditions
in the vehicle and also outdoors is extremely
important for us, states Matti Sundholm. this
was a crucial factor in the companys choice of
the Xplore iX104C2 with hi-brite indoor/outdoor
readable AllVue technology display. The computer
size is ideal.
