Culture shock
  • A lot of students who work away from their home
    country experienceculture shock
  • Intensity differs from person to person
  • All experience a period of adjustment
  • Some symptoms include feeling
  • Loneliness, avoiding contact with locals,
    spending time with other foreigners
  • Negative feelings towards local people/culture
  • Angry/frustrated/irritable
  • Boredom /tiredness
  • Inability to concentrate/work effectively
  • Compulsive eating, DRINKING, excessive sleep

Specific advice on France
  • The French work very hard long hours. Students
    are expected to do the same. Overload at peak
    times compensated by free time at low peaks.
  • French like hierarchy you must show respect for
    employers colleagues who are professionals. The
    Maitre d/chef will lord it over underlings!
    Stagiares must develop THICK skin

  • French are super polite to clients employers
    expect this high level at ALL times.
  • Sentences end with Monsieur/Madame to show
    respect students should get used to doing this
  • Students may think French impolite/rude if giving
    instructions. They are direct Wash the tables
    please which can often cause offence to Brits.
  • Speak to Language tutors if want to prepare more
    for the culture shock of working in France/Europe
