Title: DolphinSafe Tuna

1
Dolphin-Safe Tuna
  • Is it really safe for the dolphins?

2
Dolphins
  • Happy, they leap
  • Out of the surface
  • Of waves reflecting
  • The sun fragmented
  • To broken glass
  • By the stiff breeze
  • Across the bows.
  • Curving, they draw
  • Curlicues
  • And serifs with
  • Lashed tail and fin
  • Across the screen
  • Of blue horizon-
  • Images
  • Of their delight
  • Outside, displaying
  • My heart within.
  • Across this dazzling
  • Mediterranean
  • August morning
  • The dolphins write such
  • Ideograms
  • With power to wake
  • Me prisoned in
  • My human speech
  • They sigh I AM!
  • -Stephen Spender

Dolphin Facts
  • Did You Know
  • A dolphin is a smaller version of a whale.
  • A dolphin can swim as fast as 20-25 miles per
    hour.
  • A dolphin sleeps while drifting or swimming
    slowly at the surface.

4
Dolphins meet Humans
  • Dolphins have shown a considerable ability to
    learn.
  • They talk to each other in high, sharp squeaks.
  • Humans have been known to talk to dolphins using
simple hand gestures in order to make them do
    flips.

5
Dolphins and Tuna
  • Dolphins tend to swim with schools of tuna.
  • Fishermen use the surface disturbance caused by
the dolphins to locate the tuna.
  • The dolphins then get caught in the nets and wind
up dying because they can not get out to get
    oxygen at the surface.

6
Dolphin-Safe Tuna Issues
  • Since 1959, it is estimated that over 6 million
dolphins have died in tuna nets.
  • The dolphin-safe label that is on cans of tuna is
supposed to means that the tuna in those cans was
not caught using methods that chase, harass,
    encircle, or harm dolphins.
  • Tuna Fisheries have have found ways to get around
this and are still killing dolphins, however, so
there are small controversies arising over the
    validity of this label.

7
Dolphin-Safe Tuna??
  • Points to Ponder
  • Do the labels really mean what they say?
  • Are all methods of tuna fishing really safe for
    dolphins?
  • What does legislation have to do with this?
