Norway - The Brundtland Commissions Key Concepts for
Sustainability - Todays needs should not comprise the ability of
future generations to meet their needs , - A direct link exists between the economy and
environment , - The needs of the poor in all nations must be met
, - In order for our environment to be protected, the
economic conditions of the worlds poor must be
improved , - In all our actions, we must consider the impact
upon future generations.

Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland took office as

In her acceptance speech for the World Health
Assembly, Dr Brundtland said "What is our Key
mission? I see WHO's role as being the moral
voice and the technical leader in improving
health of the people of the world. Ready and able
to give advice on the key issues that can unleash
development and alleviate suffering. I see our
purpose to be combating disease and ill-health -

5Sustainable Development
- Sustainable development seeks to meet the needs
and aspirations of the present without
compromising the ability to meet those of the
future
The release of its report, Our Common Future,
marked the beginning of a global focus on the
idea of sustainable development. This United
Nations body conducted fora and interviews across
the globe in an attempt to understand the issues
surrounding environmental degradation. Their
focus, in the end, was on poverty and a policy
that would enable so-called third world
countries to develop to the living standards of
industrial nations. They saw poverty as the
critical cause of environmental degradation and a
central reason for large populations in these
countries. Sustainable development was therefore
needed, that is, economic development that can be
ecologically sustained.
6Sustainable DevelopmentEarth Summit (Brazil
1992, South Africa 2002)
- Developed Nations
- Problem ?The large and growing populations of
developing countries - Developing Nations
- Problem ?Over-consumption in rich nations
Brazil proposed that 10 of global energy supply
should come from new renewable (which excludes
large hydro and traditional biomass) by 2010.
They are backed by Norway, Philippines, Mexico,
Morocco and others. The EU is under pressure to
revise its much weaker target. The issue will go
to the ministers. Saudi Arabia has tried to get
other Arab states to dump on this plan, and
denounced Morocco for selling out Arab interests
by being green on this question. Morocco has
domestic targets of 10 by 2011 and 20 by 2020.
Last night the facilitator proposed a new energy
package including a timetable to phase out
subsidies and a role for public/private
partnerships in a social responsibility
framework) and a target to be negotiated today.
The G77 is also making a proposal today,
reportedly based around voluntary regional
targets. http//www.foe.co.uk/resource/press_relea

7Sustainable Development
- Sustainable development seeks to meet the needs
and aspirations of the present without
compromising the ability to meet those of the
future - We Looked at Situations of Sustainable Tourism
Development in some developing nations (Kenya,
Belize) - Did you pay close attention to words like
tourism dollar, local economy, employment,
jobs, balance with ecosystem, (money) plowed
back to local population etc?
