Collection of artworks. While sunflowers were famously depicted during the impressionist period and later, other artists used sunflowers in their work - and even utilized the flower for pigmentation. Native Americans created the earliest sunflower art. They used both a representation of the flower in art and processed sunflowers to create pigments. First peoples in America found ways to produce vibrant yellow and purple pigments from the flower and seeds. They used this pigmentation in pottery and other art.

Agnes Lawrence Pelton (1881–1961) was a modernist painter who was born in Germany (to American parents) and moved to the United States as a child. She studied art in the United States and Europe. She made portraits of Pueblo Native Americans, desert landscapes and still lives. Pelton's work evolved through at least three distinct themes: her early "Imaginative Paintings", art of the American Southwest people and landscape, and abstract art that reflected her spiritual beliefs.
Collection of artworks (Part 8). Native to North America, sunflowers are one of the most recognizable flowers in the world. With its sturdy stalk, the massive sunflower can grow to over six feet tall. And sunflower blossoms follow the sun throughout the day, turning their golden heads to drink in the sunshine. But beyond their unique beauty, sunflowers also help clean up environmental disasters. Fields of sunflowers have successfully removed toxins like lead, arsenic, and uranium from contaminated soil in places like Chernobyl, Ukraine, and Fukushima, Japan.

They connote both the human and the divine spirit through their soaring freedom of movement, and their linking of earth and sky (often also water). Birds can represent our souls, or stand for wisdom and the power of thought. They have visual beauty, make music, hold the secrets of the universe (‘a little bird told me’) and as we know, birds can be symbols of transcendence. In ancient times in Western culture, it was also a common belief that birds were messengers from a heavenly plane, and they soared down to earth with important messages
