TOP PRIORITY AT CAMP
  • What is the very most important concern we must
all consider as we plan and conduct all camp
    activities?

4
Safety!!
5
Safety of the campers
  • What is the worst possible thing you can think of
    that could happen at camp?
  • Serious Injury
  • Abduction
  • and God forbid this NEVER happens, but death
    could occur.

6
Have a Plan!
  • Dont be caught not paying attention!

7
That aint no bull, either!
  • Know when and where the danger lurks!

8
Safety of the campers
  • Name some places where accidents happen at camp

9
Safety of the campers
  • Your main job as a 4-H Camp Counselor is SAFETY!
  • This should be first and foremost in your mind
    during all 4-H Camp activities.
  • Awareness of your campers and your environment
will prevent most serious accidents from happening

10
Think about the possibilities and how they could
be handled
  • Could a camper get sick or even die from an
illness while at a 3-day camp?
  • Appendicitis or other illness
  • Allergies
  • Diabetic

11
Health
  • Watch for changes in campers
  • Remember they are under stress
  • Talk with our camp nurse about changes in
behavior (withdrawn, complaints of pain, angry,
    fear or sadness)

12
Campers can experience stress due to
  • Being in an unfamiliar environment
  • Using different muscles using them harder
  • Eating different foods
  • Sleeping in strange places, strange beds
  • Meeting new people
  • Having no family members around
  • Getting up in front of a large group

13
What Should Counselors Do?
  • Stress proper hygiene to campers
  • Eat well-balanced meals
  • Rest 7-8 hours of sleep
  • Take campers to the camp nurse to seek medical
care at the first sign of illness or injury
    (cover your responsibilities)
  • Have the camper clearly communicate to the nurse
their symptoms, cause of injury, etc.
  • Set a good example!

14
You represent the parent at 4-H
camp(advise/over-see/keep safe)
15
The Third Priority at Camp
  • Camp needs to be fun for ALL participants.
  • Camp is for Campers.
  • Make sure all campers are participating in
    activities

16
What is Fun?
  • When all people feel good.
  • Campers will have fond memories of activities.
  • When you are successful!
  • Sharing good times with other people.
  • Talking, laughing and sharing.
  • Not having fun at the expense of individual (i.e.
first ask campers if they would like to
    participate in Table Fun)

17
THE TOP 3 4-H CAMP PRIORITIES ARE
  • Safety
  • Health
  • Fun

18
Counselors Should
  • Put forth their best effort
  • Work together as a team
  • Share the burden of responsibility
