- AFEB - several recommendations concerning use of
ADV vaccine in the military - Used by Army, Navy, and Marines in recruit
training camps - Production of adenovirus vaccines (Type 4 and
Type 7) ended in 1996

- Supplies extended
- Type 4 ran out in 1998
- Type 7 in 1999
- Since 1999, 10-12 of recruits ill with
adenovirus infection - Several outbreaks
- 2 deaths in recruits in 2000

PROCUREMENT EFFORTS
- 2000 - MRMC (USAMMA) sought new manufacturer
- 2001 - Several responses to RFP
- Contract award will be made shortly
- Once award made, will take years (5-6 years) for
approval and production

QUESTION TO AFEB
- Review known and suggested non-vaccine methods to
minimize/control transmission - Recommend potentially effective non-vaccine
methods of transmission control
