Title: The SttNet Project for Teaching Statistics
1The St_at_tNet Project for Teaching Statistics
2Outline
- History of the project
- St_at_tNet phase 1
- St_at_tNet phase 2
- Conclusion and perspectives
3- From Compstat Barcelona (1996) to Compstat
Prague - CD-Rom CNAM-Media Statistique began in the 90s
(Toolbook)
4St_at_tNet Phase 1
- Project began in 1998 at CNAM
- Funded by the Ministry of Education and the
Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie. - Consortium of several universities
- Now a complete course in Introductory Statistics,
with 6 modules - Module 1 Descriptive Statistics
- Module 2 Probability and Combinatorics
- Module 3 Random Variables
- Module 4 Sampling and Estimation
- Module 5 Simple Regression
- Module 6 Tests
5 CNAM is a major public institution for
continuous education. It is an integral part of
the French Ministry of Education. It has a
unique, three-fold purpose
- Teaching
- 70 000 adult students throughout France
- classes held evenings and Saturdays
- Research
- Conservation
- the National Museum of Techniques
- a Scientific and Technical Library
6 The CNAM caters to all professional adults
wishing to take training courses while working,
as well as young people at the beginning of their
career.
- Courses available to all
- at any time in their career
- covering all levels of higher education
- no previous qualifications required
- low registration fees
- The CNAM enables students to
- improve their skills
- keep ahead of developments in their field
- follow further training
- get a degree or recognised qualifications
7 Thanks to the CNAM network, one can begin one's
course of study in Paris, and continue in any
other French town.
- A large complex in the heart of Paris
- 22 regional Centres all over France (including
overseas territories) plus some foreign countries
(Germany, Lebanon, Romania, Spain). CNAM is
present in 150 cities - Distance teaching
8 - Introductory Statistics for almost all
curricula. - Large potential audiences inside and outside CNAM
(school teachers) - Need for a distance teaching tool
- Nothing in French like
- Hyperstat http//davidmlane.com/hyperstat/index.ht
ml - Surfstat http//www.anu.edu.au/nceph/surfstat/surf
stat-home/surfstat.html - Wise http//acad.cgu.edu/wise/
9Our philosophy
- St_at_tNet is funded by public money
- Should be available for free (self-learning)
through the web - Our contribution to statistical literacy
- Free resource for public schools in France and
french-speaking universities - Payment for additional services (tutorship,
validation) according to each institution policy
10Distance teaching at CNAM
- Exam is passed in the closest regional centre
from the students home. - St_at_tNet is integrated in the Plei_at_d platform
tutorship, FAQ, forum, e-mail - CD-Rom for off-line work. On line connection only
necessary for tutorship, links...
11Course organization
- St_at_tNet is like an interactive book, with
animations, where the student is prompted by
questions, exercises. - Course structured in introduction, development,
summary, exercises - Analysis of answers solutions always provided
most adult people refuse to be stopped in their
learning progression - Tools glossary, tables, links
- Downloadable files course notes, past exams,
data files
12Demo
- Free access to the web site
- http//www.agro-montpellier.fr/cnam-lr/statnet
13In brief
- Low cost for students, but high development cost
100 hours for a 1 hour course - St_at_tNet adopted by the AUF with CNAM validation
and by the French Military Academy - St_at_tNet used complementarily to presential
courses - New way of teaching and learning more efficient,
networking of resources, internet instead of
books - Better results but selection bias
14Technical and pedagogical choices
- Goal attract beginners to statistics
- Playful spirit
- Flash animations
- Standard HTML
15St_at_tNet phase 2 Linear modelling
- Advanced students
- Still computer based
- Need for a new layout
- Deep thinking implies more writing
16- Computer based
- Dont study without it
- Data driven
- Real data, case studies (synthetic approach)
- Hands-on learning
- Questioning is education
- Learning the art of asking questions
- Inscribed in History
17Distance learning form (1)
18Distance learning form (2)
- Printable textbook quality
- Web site communication hub
- Student Student
- Tutor
(pdf files)
19Distance learning form (3)
- Reading maketh a full man
- Conference, a ready man
- Writing, an exact man.
- Francis Bacon
- This is the essence of the learning paradigm

22Conclusion and perspectives
- The end of teachers?
- Or a ticket for eternity?
- More contacts between tutor and students
- Learning is a slow individual process
- Writing the best tool for thought unveiling
23Conclusion and perspectives (2)
- Competition or cooperation?
- More statistical training needed
- Which future for web-based courses?
- Where is the best course?
- Internet carries the worst and the best
- Should IASC (or others) give quality labels?
