Wright Brothers
  • The Wright brothers achieved the first sustained,
    powered, controlled flight in a heavier-than-air
    machine. Beginning as bicycle manufacturers in
    Dayton, Ohio, in 1892, the brothers became
    interested in flight, first experimenting with
    gliders and kites. On December 17, 1903, near
    Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, they made history
    with four successful flights, the longest being
    852 feet and lasting 59 seconds. The Wrights
    improved their machine and patented it in 1906. A
    series of exhibitions in the United States and
    Europe popularized flying and led to the
    formation of the Wright Company in 1909 to
    manufacture aircraft.
