Title: Cell cycle ex' 7

1
Cell cycle ex. 7
  • Mitosis

2
Cell must divide
  • Body cells divide
  • allows us to grow
  • allows repair
  • allows replacement of worn parts
  • this process is mitosis
  • Sex cells (gametes) also must divide
  • gives us the ability to create offspring
  • this process is slightly different
  • it is called MEIOSIS

3
Interphase
  • DNA duplicates
  • Duplication of other internal structures
  • in humans there are 46 chromosomes in each cells
    (except mature sperm and eggs)

4
Next comes real mitosis
  • The cell goes through 4 more steps during this
    type of division
  • you end up with 2 identical Daughter Cells
  • Remember, this is division of the body cells, not
    the SEX CELLS
  • begins karyokinesis

5
Prophase.
  • The nuclear membrane begins to disappear
  • the chromosomes become visible because they
    shorten and thicken

6
metaphase
  • The chromosomes line up on the equatorial plane
  • the mitotic spindle attaches to the chromosomes
    at the centromere

7
anaphase
  • Chromosomes separate and move to opposite poles
  • Cytokinesis begins

8
Telophase
  • Cytokinesis-division of the cytoplasm completes
    here
  • nuclear membrane reappears
  • chromosomes become less visible
