Title: The Reformation in England

1
The Reformation in England
  • Reform or Be Left Behind

2
Change Was Afoot in England
  • Henry VIII was King (1509-1547)
  • Grew up a devout Catholic
  • His wife was Catherine of Aragon
  • The two had only one child, a daughter named Mary

No Male Heir to the Throne
  • Henry feared a Civil War
  • Catherine was becoming too old for kids
  • Wanted the Pope to ANNUL his marriage
  • This way he could remarry, and still be cool with
his friends in the church and with God

5
Corruption Never Pays
  • The Pope, Pope Clement VII, was a corrupt Pope
  • He was in political trouble
  • He chose poorly between warring states
  • The emperor of the winning side held him captive
  • The funny thing is, it turns out that Catherines
nephew was the emperor holding him hostage
  • So, and this is a real kicker, the nephew refuses
to allow Pope Clement VII to grant the annulment!
  • Hilarious, I know.
  • But please, try to control yourself.

6
Henry VIII Starts His Own Game
  • He calls a session of Parliament to annul his
    marriage
  • But this goes against the Catholic Church
  • So he starts his own church!
  • The Church of England, which is still tied to
    Rome
  • Parliament Annuls the marriage and makes Henry
VIII in charge of the Church of England
  • He is now both a political and a religious leader

7
Love is in the Air
  • Henry VIII marries Anne
  • Again more humor this story just kills me!
  • Anne has a kid, but it is a GIRL!! (Elizabeth)
  • Even funnier yet, she later becomes one of
Englands greatest rulers ever, and I mean ever
    like fo-ever!

8
Or Ill Cry and Take My Game With Me
  • So Henry VIII wants his cake and to eat it too
  • He takes England out of the Catholic Church
  • He seizes the Churchs land and redistributes it
    to his nobles
  • You can imagine his new friends

9
The Nursery Rhyme
  • Henry VIII gets many wives
  • 1. Catherine of Aragon (divorced)
  • 2. Anne Boleyn (beheaded)
  • 3. Jane Seymour (died) (Edward!...hooray!)
  • 4. Anne of Cleaves (divorced)
  • 5. Catherine Howard (beheaded)
  • 6. Catherine Parr (survived)
  • He even gets a son, Edward,
  • who rules only briefly

The Tudor Timeline
  • This website says is so succinctly

12
Women Contribute
  • Queen Mary and then Queen Elizabeth had the most
    obvious role
  • Educated women wrote treatises on religious
    issues
  • Most were influential in the early moments of the
    reformation
  • As the reformation started to settle in, rituals
started to develop and women started to get
squeezed out of the decision making process
  • Women started to assert themselves in their
    marriages and in their homes

13
There is still one small tiny little Issue
  • That would be the issue of women being accused of
witchcraft and being burned at the stake or
    otherwise killed

14
The Empire Strikes Back
  • The Catholic Church Responds and does some
    reforming of its own
  • The rise of the Jesuit order of Priests
  • They focused on Three major activities
  • They formed great schools
  • They sent out missionaries to convert
    non-Catholics
  • They set out to stop the spread of Protestantism
  • The Popes also Reform the way they dole out
    indulgences

Journal Entry
  • We have now examined three breaks from the
Catholic Church. Which break, do you feel, made
the most sense? Think as if you were alive when
    the splits occurred.
  • First, what are the major differences between
    each split?
  • Then, tell me your opinion of each split. Were
they legit or simply self serving?
  • Be sure to fully explain your ideas
