Photosynthesis
  • A lesson for 4th Grade

2
Introduction
  • Oh no! The Publishing Company that publishes
science books has just called to tell me that
they accidentally deleted one of the important
chapters for their next text book. This chapter
was all about photosynthesis! They have asked for
help and since we have been learning all about
plants, I thought we could learn all about
photosynthesis together and then help The
    Publishing Company.

3
Task
  • Your task is to research and learn all about
photosynthesis as a group. You will then take all
the information you have learned and write a
chapter to help The Publishing Company! You will
be searching the web and using Chapter 17 from
our textbook to gather information. Your chapter
will be written as a paper. You will also need to
make 2 different diagrams to be illustrations for
    your chapter.

4
Process 1
  • You will be put into groups of four.
  • The first thing your group needs to do is learn a
few important words. Since you will be
    encountering these words throughout your
research, it is important to know what they mean
and how they are involved in photosynthesis. Fill
out this worksheet as you research. The following
    links may be very helpful

5
Process 2
  • 3. Now that you know a little more about the
basic building blocks of photosynthesis. Its
time to dig a little deeper and get the real
important facts. Research the following links,
your text book, and books from the school
library. Organize you thoughts on this
    worksheet.
  • I encourage you to search for more sites to help
you- the web has a lot to offer!
  • 4. Then you need to compile all the information
you have gathered and write an informative and
interesting paper on all you have learned. This
paper should be one and a half to two pages in
length. Remember it is going in a text book for
students your age. Make sure its easy to
    understand and follow.

6
Process 3
  • 5. Next your group will draw 2 diagrams of
photosynthesis. There are many models on the
websites you have been looking at. One of them
will need to also be drawn on a poster board, so
that we can hang them up in our classroom. We
will work on the diagrams in art class so that
you can work together and have supplies.
  • 6. Altogether, your group is required to turn in
the Vocabulary words worksheet, your groups
    Photosynthesis Chapter worksheet, your
    photosynthesis chapter, typed, your
photosynthesis chapter, and your diagrams (one on
a poster). We will put this altogether to send to
The Publishing Company so that they can select
which chapter they will use in the next 4th grade
    science text book.

7
Evaluation
  • This is just a brief evaluation to let you know
what I will be looking for but if you print out
the rubric, it will be much more exact.
  • Things I will be looking for
  • Completed Vocabulary worksheets
  • Typed, well-written papers of proper length and
    with good content
  • Neat and colorful diagrams
  • Group Participation

8
Conclusion
  • The Publishing Company has just sent me a thank
you letter saying that the chapters we sent were
so wonderful they dont know which one they are
going to pick to put in their book. As a thank
you for all your hard work they said they would
sponsor a class pizza and ice cream party!!!

10
Introduction (Teacher)
  • I came up with this project for my IST 396 class
    at Oakland University.
  • This lesson is to teach kids about photosynthesis
    and how it works.

11
Learners (Teacher)
  • This lesson is mainly for fourth grade science
but it also involves some language arts because
they will need to be able to write a paper. This
project could easily be adapted to many other
grades. Students learn about photosynthesis all
    through their years in school.
  • The learners will need to know about plants and
    what they consist of.
  • It will also be necessary for the students to
know how to navigate the web.

12
Standards (Teacher)
  • As a result of this lesson, students will be able
to explain the process of photosynthesis, step by
step. They will also know how to draw it out.
  • All students will ask questions that help them
learn about the world design and conduct
    investigations using appropriate methodology and
technology learn from books and other sources of
    information and communicate findings of
    investigations, using appropriate technology.
  • All students will use classification systems to
describe groups of living things compare and
contrast differences in the life cycles of living
things investigate and explain how living things
obtain and use energy and analyze how parts of
living things are adapted to carry out specific
    functions.
  • All students will explain how parts of an
ecosystem are related and how they interact
explain how energy is distributed to living
things in an ecosystem and analyze how humans
    and the environment interact.
  • More Science Standards

13
Process 1 (Teacher)
  • You will be put into groups of four.
  • The first thing your group needs to do is learn a
few important words. Since you will be
    encountering these words throughout your
research, it is important to know what they mean
and how they are involved in photosynthesis. Fill
out this worksheet as you research. The following
    links may be very helpful
  • You may want to add a few more vocabulary words,
depending on what your students are learning. I
thought it would be a good idea to have them get
familiar with the words first so that they knew
    what they were writing about.
  • Variations
  • I think another great idea would be to actually
grow plants in the classroom if it is possible.

14
Process 2 (Teacher)
  • 3. Now that you know a little more about the
basic building blocks of photosynthesis. Its
time to dig a little deeper and get the real
important facts. Research the following links,
your text book, and books from the school
library. Organize you thoughts on this
    worksheet.
  • It would be a good idea to find books in the
school library ahead of time and have them in
your classroom for the kids. This project could
take anywhere from a week to 2 weeks. You may
also want to make worksheets that focus on what
you are trying to get the students to focus on.

15
Process 3 (Teacher)
  • 5. Next your group will draw 2 diagrams of
photosynthesis. There are many models on the
websites you have been looking at. One of them
will need to also be drawn on a poster board, so
that we can hang them up in our classroom. We
will work on the diagrams in art class so that
you can work together and have supplies.
  • Once again, just adapt this to whatever will work
in your classroom. I just thought that it would
be easier for them to do it together at school,
than to have to meet outside of school.
  • 6. Altogether, your group is required to turn in
the Vocabulary words worksheet, your groups
    Photosynthesis Chapter worksheet, your
photosynthesis chapter, typed, and your diagrams
(one on a poster). We will put this altogether to
send to The Publishing Company so that they can
select which chapter they will use in the next
    4th grade science text book.

Resources (Teacher)
  • Flying Turtle Website Why is Photosynthesis Even
    Important?
  • Photosynthesis Chlorophyll
  • Discovery Channel Kids The Photosynthesis Process
  • More Photosynthesis Photosynthesis and
    transpiration
  • Students will need art pencils, markers, and
poster board to make their diagrams.
  • The students should also have access to textbooks
    and library books about photosynthesis.
  • This project should not require many teachers, I
believe it would be completely possible to teach
    this yourself.

17
Evaluation (Teacher)
  • Rubric
  • Things I will be looking for
  • Completed Vocabulary worksheets
  • Typed, well-written papers of proper length and
    with good content
  • Neat and colorful diagrams
  • Group Participation
  • You may want to also have some way of grading
individually, in case groups are really having a
    hard time.
  • You will know if this was a success if the
students enjoy searching and organizing the
information AND are able to apply it later on the
    test.

18
Conclusions (Teacher)
  • This project is a good idea because students get
bored with just listening to us tell them
everything. It is good for them to have hands on
activities and that they feel like what they are
doing is really important. They will be more
likely to remember what they have learned and
apply that knowledge on a test.
  • To reward all their hard work, I thought a pizza
and ice cream party would be a lot of fun.
  • Maybe at the party you could have a class
discussion about photosynthesis, or a little
trivia game to quiz their knowledge.
