difference for our local ecosystem.

In the beginning
In November 2003, 100 select students from South
Florida High Schools joined for the Student Ocean
Conference

Then there was
In January 2004, 70 select students from 14
Coastal Ecosystem Learning Centers (CELC) from
around the U.S. joined for the National Student
Ocean Conference

Based on each CELCs call to action, a combined
Student Proclamation was formed
The students at this summit have committed to
many actions to help mitigate some serious
national ocean issues. The following activity
captures the spirit of these commitments The
Regional Ocean Conservation Club (ROCC) is made
up of high schools interested in ocean
conservation. High schools would utilize their
partnerships with colleges and other
organizations to enact projects dealing with
specific problems within their region. This is a
way to implement everyone's plan of action so
that we can all work together for the betterment
of our environment. The Regional Student Summit
Group sponsored by IGFA has inaugurated this
movement by networking with the other thirteen
regional student summit groups who took part in
the National Student Summit on Ocean Issues.

What is the mission of ROCC?
Student coalition working with local, state and
national organizations to protect and restore the
health of aquatic resources through education and
conservation programs.
What is the purpose of ROCC?
To spread the knowledge of ocean conservation.
To influence the impact of coastal development.
To conserve the future health of our ecosystems.

What is the future of ROCC?
Initiate ROCC in Southeast Florida High Schools
Incorporate ROCC into other high schools
throughout the U.S., including Hawaii and Alaska
Expand ROCC nationwide

Prospective projects
High schools partner with colleges and other
agencies to collaborate in ocean conservation
projects
  • Re-introduce mangroves, plant sea grasses, and
    deploy artificial reefs
  • Propose tests for boating and fishing licenses
  • Post fishing regulations at fishing piers and
    docking stations with catchy signs
    Have you measured
    your fish today
  • Volunteer inspectors at docks to check anglers
    catch
  • Develop recreational guides for tourists
  • Petition the government for stricter regulations
    on coastal development
  • Contact Discovery Channel or Animal Planet to do
    a series on Sustainable Fisheries
