Case study
Village of Industry
Three villages(Tuzla-Gebze-Kocaeli) situated
one by one, in the sea line of Izmit Bay, in
Marmara Sea region. From 1965 on, with the
first industrial enterprises, this area has
become the heart of industrial conduct and
economy in Turkey.Today this area is called
industrial village as a result of the intensive
industrial activities.Such a base has caused
eruption in the environment, contamiation of sea
and lakes, and soil, pollution of the air, and
has become a maasive threat for the human life
and the ecosystem around the area.

Center of toxic waste

This three chain of villages are situated
between Istanbul and Kocaeli(city near, in the
east of Istanbul). TuzlaA district of
Istanbul, which consist 600 factories functioning
in different fields, but generally on pigment
industry. GebzeIn a field of 244 hectares
square, 50 factories of chemical and automobile
industry, 17 of optic-electronic-plastical
industry, 9 of food and package industry, medical
gas Factories.Totally 115 factories are located
in this area. Kocaeli201 factories, 107 of
which are of foreign initiatives.The city has
27.3 of chemical industry,20.68 of main metal
industry of Turkey. Every year in this area
approximately 750.000 tons of industrial waste is
produced.There is only one waste recycling
center (IZAYDAS)whose capacity is only 35.000
tons a year. What happens to the rest of 965.000
toxic waste a year is unclear.Accordiing to the
researches made in the soil and the sea of this
area, in every single drop of soil big
percentage of toxic waste was discovered. .

Location near Istanbul, and open for sea
transportation.

Not enough prevention
One of the most important reasons of pollution
in this ares is because of the laws which arent
so broad in scope and the poor structuring of the
factories with insufficent ways of handling their
waste.Barrels full of toxic waste has been
found. In July 2005, 5 barrels left in the
woods caused the death of many animals and
organism.In April 2006 about 25 barrels buried in
the soil in December 2007 4 barrels 5 February
2008 more than 100 barrels have been
found.Factories responsible for these barrels
have been fined with huge amounts.But for them
paying for the fine is more profitable than
setting up the recycling system to their
factories.In this case, law and punishments
arent deterrent enough. As a result of the
pollution in the air, sea and soil in this area,
cancer and other related health problems has
increased.

National legislative tools for eco-crimes fight
Its curial to use the techology that recycle or
recover the toxic wastes and pollutants which
comes out during the use of natural enegry
sources, and these natural enegry sources should
be used efficiently and shouldnt be
