6West Virginia Flag
- West Virginia's flag displays a rock containing
the date June 20, 1863, the day West Virginia
became a state. - The two men represent farming and mining. Below
them are two rifles with a "Liberty Cap" on top
of the rifles. - A banner ribbon includes the state motto
"Mountaineers Are Always Free. - Around the picture are a wreath of rhododendron
and the name of the state on a red ribbon.
7West Virginia Seal
- The Great Seal of West Virginia, which is also
the Coat of Arms, was adopted by the Legislature
on September 26, 1863. - The Seal bears the legend, "State of West
Virginia", together with the motto, "Montani
Semper Liberi" (Mountaineers Are Always Free). - A farmer stands to the right and a miner to the
left of a large ivy-draped rock bearing the date
of the State's admission to the Union. - In front of the rock are two hunters' rifles upon
which rests the "Cap of Liberty. - Joseph H. Diss Debar designed the State Seal in
1863.
8State Bird
- The CARDINAL was made West Virginia's official
bird on March 7, 1949. - The male of the species is rich scarlet with a
mask and shading of black, while the young birds
and females are less brilliant in color. - The adult bird measures approximately eight
inches long. - It can be found from New York State to the Gulf
of Mexico and as far west as Oklahoma.
9State Animal
- The BLACK BEAR was selected as the official
State Animal of West Virginia by a poll of
students, teachers and sportsmen conducted by the
Department of Natural Resources in 1954-55. - It is the only species of bear found in the
State. - While commonly referred to as the "black bear"
its coloring is actually tinted with brown. - A litter usually consists of one or two cubs.
- The adult reaches an average maximum weight of
250 pounds.
10State Flower
- The RHODODENDRON MAXIMUM or "Big Laurel" was
voted the official State Flower of West Virginia
by House Joint Resolution on January 29, 1903. - It is a shrub of the heath family and may be
recognized by its large evergreen leaves and
delicate pale pink or white blooms, mottled with
either red or yellow flecks. - It blooms in early spring.
11State Tree
- The SUGAR MAPLE was designated West Virginia's
official tree by House Concurrent Resolution No.
12 adopted by the Legislature on March 7, 1949. - Sugar Maple trees grow to heights of
approximately 120 feet and are considered
excellent wood for furniture. - Maple syrup and sugar are made by collecting the
sap from this tree during a few weeks in early
spring and boiling it down until it reaches the
syrup state.
12State Insect
- The MONARCH BUTTERFLY was selected as the
official insect of West Virginia by Senate
Concurrent Resolution on March 1, 1995.
This large American butterfly has light brown
wings with black veins and white-spotted black
borders.
It is noted for its long distance migrations and
its brightly striped caterpillars that feed on
the milkweed plant.
The Monarch is also called the milkweed butterfly.
13State Fruit
- The apple was designated as the official State
Fruit by House Concurrent Resolution No 56,
adopted by the Legislature on March 7, 1972.
The GOLDEN DELICIOUS was chosen as West
Virginia's apple in 1995.
This large, yellow apple is sweet and extra juicy
with a crisp white texture. It is good for
cooking and excellent for applesauce and juice.
14State Fish
- The BROOK TROUT was designated the official State
Fish by House Concurrent Resolution No. 6,
Regular Session, 1973, following a pool of
sportsmen who favored the Brook Trout. - The species is a native of West Virginia.
