Part II Blood Vessels
2
Arteries
  • Carries blood that leaves the heart.
  • Right Ventricle pumps blood into the arteries
    that go to the lungs.
  • Left Ventricle pumps blood into the aorta.
  • First branches of arteries are called coronary
    arteries- carry blood to heart

3
Arteries
  • Each artery branches to smaller and smaller
    arteries.
  • Walls are very thick- 3 cell layers
  • Strong and flexible
  • Able to withstand a lot of pressure

4
Arteries
  • Pulse- cause by the alternating expansion and
    relaxation of the artery wall

5
Capillaries
  • Tiny blood vessels where materials are exchanged
    between blood and bodys cells.
  • Walls are only 1 cell layer thick
  • Transfer materials such as O2 and glucose

6
Veins
  • After blood travels through capillaries, blood
    returns to heart by veins
  • 3 layers thick, but are thinner than arteries

7
Blood Pressure
  • Caused by the force with which the ventricles
    contract
  • Pushes against the walls of blood vessels
  • Pressure farther from heart is less

8
Blood Pressure
  • Measured using a sphygmomanometer.
  • Top number (higher) measure of blood pressure
    when ventricles contract
  • Bottom number (lower) measure of blood pressure
    when ventricles relax.
