2Please construct, on green card, an isosceles
triangle with base 8 cm and altitude 10 cm.
and cut out your triangle . . .

4scalene triangles work well
or how about multiple triangles similar,
congruent or maybe even use a vanishing point
5 you could use symmetrically cut trees
Do you remember Maths in Practise?
6My premise is that we do many things for practice
or drill. So . . . why not turn some of these
activities into something which is useful, fun
and creative?
7a points plotting exercise graphing line
segments a symmetry activity finding gradients,
distances finding equations of intervals
8In year 8 we study a topic on circles which
includes the use of compasses and learning the
terminology as well as finding the area and the
circumference.
- Please construct and then cut out the following
circles - a red one with radius 4.5 cm
- a black one with diameter 8 cm
- a smaller black one with radius 2cm

10A set of concentric circles or tangent circles
could be made into a design for the front of a
card

11Now, I did say that Pythagoras had a part to play
. . .
12Pythagoras of Samos lived from about 569 BC to
about 475 BC Pythagoras was a Greek philosopher
who made important developments in mathematics,
astronomy, and the theory of music. The theorem
now known as Pythagoras' Theorem was known to
the Babylonians, ancient Egyptians and ancient
Chinese 1000 years earlier but he may have been
the first to prove it.
13In year 8 during term 1 this year, we had a
lesson on accuracy in measurement and
construction which included an activity involving
the construction of a number of different sized
rectangles, making the right angles in a variety
of ways, one of which involved becoming a rope
stretcher.
14We made a very simple layered card just before
Mothers Day
15Paper folding and origami are often used in a
topic on plane shapes

17Thank you all very much for your interest and
input. I hope that youve found something worth
thinking about.
