• To restrict the diffusion of ions and molecules
  i.e. control the exit and entry of substances out
  and into the structure
• To provide a structure on which protein molecules
  can be assembled e.g. in the mitochondria, the
  respiratory enzymes are arranged on the inner
  membrane in a specific order
