What is Financial Aid?
  • Financial Aid is funding provided through
    enrollment fee waivers, grants, scholarships,
    work, and loans to help assist with paying for
    college costs
  • Financial Aid is not a life style
  • Financial Aid is used for
  • educational expenses only

How Do I Apply for Financial Aid?
  • To apply for most types of aid, students must
    complete the Free Application for Federal Student
    Aid (FAFSA)
  • The FAFSA is available on-line at
  • www.fafsa.ed.gov
  • The Priority Deadline to apply is March 2
  • You only need to apply once per academic year
    which covers Summer, Fall Spring Semesters

How to Request a PIN Number
  • If you are filling out the FAFSA for the first
    time, you must visit www.pin.ed.gov and apply for
    a free pin number.
  • PIN Numbers are confidential and should not be
    shared with anyone including any Financial Aid
    Administrators
  • It is your option to have your PIN Number
    displayed immediately, emailed or mailed
  • Your PIN Number is your electronic signature to
    submit the FAFSA

How Do I Apply for Financial Aid?
  • ? Be sure to include Rio Hondo Colleges federal
    school code 001269 so that we can receive your
    FAFSA information electronically
  • Make sure your Social Security Number is correct
    on your FAFSA and that it matches the number you
    provided on your Admissions
  • application to Rio Hondo College

Results of the Financial Aid Application
  • FAFSA results will be returned to students within
    24 - 48 hours if an e-mail address is given on
    the application
  • If no e-mail address is given, then
  • it will be returned to students within
  • 7-10 business days via mail.

  • SAR - Student Aid Report, the results of the
    FAFSA. The student will receive a SAR after
    completing the FAFSA
  • When the SAR is received students MUST read the
    first page of the document for important
    information. Examples Verification, Wrong SSN,
    Citizenship issues, etc.

  • Please do not make any corrections or changes to
    your SAR without consulting with your Financial
    Aid Assistant
  • If you make changes or corrections it may cause
    delays in the Financial Aid processing
  • The Financial Aid Office will make corrections or
    changes on your behalf

How is Financial Aid Determined?
  • EFC - Expected Family Contribution located on the
    1st page of the SAR. Based on the information
    you provided on the FAFSA
  • This is the amount that the Federal Government
    determines you and your family can contribute
    towards your education
  • Budget/COA (Cost of Attendance) - The estimated
    cost of attending school which includes fees,
    travel, books, etc
  • COA - EFC NEED, example 5,000 -10004,000
  • NEED - the amount that Financial Aid will try to
    cover with funding

Types of Financial Aid
BOG- Board of Governors Fee Waiver
  • BOGW- The State of California pays per unit fees
    on behalf of the student
  • The Fee Waiver is only offered to California
    residents who meet certain income standards or
    who have calculated need
  • The BOGW covers 20 per unit, 1.00 Student Rep
    Fee and 2.50 of the Parking Permit
  • Students are responsible to pay the College
    Service Fee, Health Fee, Material Fees and 20
    for Parking Permit

BOGW Fee Waiver
  • Students who are currently receiving cash
    benefits from TANF/Cal Works, SSI, General
    Relief, or are a certified veteran dependent by
    the Calif. Dept. of Veteran Affairs are eligible
    for a BOGW
  • You will need to bring current proof to the
    Financial Aid Office by bringing one of the
    following documentation

BOGW Fee Waiver?
  • Copy of your current months subsidies check
  • Copy of your current Notice of Action
  • Statement of current Supplemental Social Security
    Income
  • Agency Certification Form
  • (available at the Financial Aid Office)
  • Letter of certification from the
  • Calif. Dept. of Veteran Affairs

Federal Grants
  • Pell Grant Money given to students by the
    federal government for educational cost with an
    EFC of 4,042 or less
  • Maximum amount for an academic year is 4,731

Federal Grants
  • SEOG - Supplemental Educational Opportunity
    Grant, federal funds given to students for
    educational cost on a first-come, first-serve
    basis who have the lowest EFC
  • Maximum amount for an academic
  • year is 1,200 (maximum amount varies per
    institution)

Federal Grants
  • ACG Academic Competitiveness Grant, is a new
    merit and need based federal grant for
    undergraduate students.
  • Must successfully complete a rigorous secondary
    program of study
  • First year eligibility maximum 750.
  • Second year eligibility maximum 1300.

  • To apply students must complete FAFSA
  • The FAFSA is available on-line at

  • Cal Grant B - Funding given to students by the
    state for fees, books supplies based on the
    students GPA and FAFSA data
  • Maximum amount for an academic year is 1,551

  • Cal Grant C State funding given to students in
    vocational or technical programs based on the
    students GPA and FAFSA data
  • Maximum amount for an academic
  • year is 576

  • Chafee Grant The Chafee Grant awards money to
    foster youth and former foster youths to use for
    career and technical training or college courses
    up to 5,000
  • To apply complete your FAFSA application
  • Submit a California Chafee Grant Program
    Application via the web at www.csac.ca.gov or
    contact your ILP Coordinator

  • Students must complete the FAFSA and GPA
    Verification Form by March 2nd
  • Students can also apply a second
  • time at a Community College
  • by Sept. 2nd

How Do I Apply for Cal Grant B C?
  • The GPA Verification Forms are available at your
    former high school, the Financial Aid Office or
    on-line at www.csac.ca.gov
  • ? NOTE Rio Hondo students with 16 or more
    completed degree applicable units (classes
    w/grades) with a GPA of at least 2.0, will
    automatically get their GPA electronically sent
    for Cal Grant application

Federal Work Study
  • Federal Work Study - is a federal program that
    helps students get jobs through the schools work
    program. Students receive funds in the form of a
    monthly paycheck
  • Jobs are available for students to work
    on-campus

How Do I Apply for FWS?
  • Complete the FAFSA by March 2, and indicate you
    are interested in work-study on your FAFSA
    application
  • Federal Work Study is offered on a first-come,
    first-serve basis
  • Once eligibility is determined, seek employment
    through The Office of Financial Aid

Book Grants Scholarships
  • Scholarships are money that students may apply
    for based on Financial Need, Talent, GPA, Major,
    etc. (based on donor request)

Book Grants are vouchers or cash given to
students to purchase books and in some cases
educational supplies

  • ? To apply for Book Grants, students who have a
    BOGW-A or B may be eligible for an EOPS book
    grant. Student must check with the EOPS Office

  • To apply for scholarships, students should check
    online at https//scholarship.riohondo.edu/stars/

Federal Loans
  • Federal Loans Money loaned to students by the
    Federal Government for students education
  • (LOANS MUST BE REPAID)

How Do I Apply for Federal Loans?
  • Complete the FAFSA
  • Attend a mandatory Loan Workshop (dates will be
    posted in fall)
  • Student must be on time for the workshop and stay
    the entire session

Financial Aid Processing
  • Verification this is a process where the
    federal government selects students randomly for
    the Financial Aid Office to verify the
    information entered on the FAFSA.
  • This is a mandatory process required by federal
    law and students must comply to receive financial
    aid.

Financial Aid Processing
  • Verification requires the financial aid office to
    request a copy of your signed federal taxes
    W2s. If you are a dependent student you will
    also need to provide your parents signed federal
    taxes to verify the information
  • Please allow 5-6 weeks to complete processing on
    all financial aid applications from the time you
    submit documentation

What Am I Eligible For?
  • Once requested paperwork is in the Financial Aid
    Office and processed, you will receive an Award
    Notification of Financial Aid informing you of
    eligible aid
  • Awards are based on full-time status (12 or more
    units per semester)
  • Your disbursement will be adjusted accordingly if
    you are in less than full-time.

Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (F/A
SAP)
  • The Federal Government requires that colleges
    monitor academic progress of aid recipients
  • F/A SAP is reviewed every semester

Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (F/A
SAP)
  • The standards for this policy is as follows
  • Student must maintain a minimum of a 2.0
    cumulative GPA
  • Student must successfully complete all units
    attempted. (receiving W, F, I,NC,IP are
    not considered completed units)
  • Students may not exceed the allowable \ degree
    applicable units within which to complete an A.A.
    degree, an A.S. degree, a certificate, or
    transfer program (94 units is standard)

Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (F/A
SAP)
  • Students who meet or exceed these standards are
    said to be making satisfactory academic progress

  • Students who do not meet the standards will be
    considered
  • On financial aid probation status (warning) or
  • Terminated status, meaning you will
  • be ineligible to receive federal student
    financial aid based on failure to demonstrate
    satisfactory academic progress

Repayments
  • Students who withdraw from all classes prior to
    completing more than 60 of the semester will
    have their financial aid eligibility recalculated
    based on
  • the percentage of the semester completed, and
    will be required to repay any unearned financial
    aid they received

Withdrawals
  • A students withdrawal date is
  • The date the student officially notifies the
    Admissions Office of his or her intent to
    withdraw, OR
  • The midpoint of the semester for a student who
    leaves without notifying the college, OR
  • The students last date of attendance in a
    documented academically-related program

Refunds
  • The Board of Governors Fee Waiver (BOGW) must be
    secured by the end of the term in which you were
    awarded to be eligible for a refund
  • Students who have paid enrollment fees and who
    have been awarded a valid BOGW must request a
    refund through the Cashiers Office before the
    end of the semester
  • No refunds will be given after the end of the
    semester

(No Exceptions)

Disbursement of Funds
  • Students receiving a Federal Pell Grant, SEOG,
    ACG, Cal Grant, and Loans will be paid in two
    disbursements per term based on their current
    enrollment status.

Disbursement of FundsAdditional Information
  • Students attending multiple institutions can only
    be awarded financial aid at one school for the
    same term
  • (One exception to the rule BOGW fee waiver is
    the only eligible aid for concurrent enrollment)

  • Make sure your mailing address, phone number, and
    your e-mail address are accurate with the
    Financial Aid Office and the Admission and
    Records Office
  • The majority of communication
  • from the Financial Aid Office
  • will be sent via email

  • The Financial Aid Office will send you post cards
    and letters throughout the year informing you of
    disbursement dates, financial aid processing, and
    other information as needed
